Did Florentino Perez pull off a transfer masterstroke just to hurt Barcelona? The summer transfer window is often dominated by eye-catching bids, dramatic negotiations and endless speculation.  Yet sometimes the most significant moves are not the ones that end with a player holding a new shirt at a presentation ceremony. Instead, they are the moves designed to influence the market itself. That may well be the case with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and the recent noise surrounding Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. It must be remembered that Real Madrid submitted a €150 million offer for the Argentine international, which came as a surprise to many.  On the surface, it looked like another ambitious move from a club that has never been afraid to pursue the biggest names in football.  Furthermore, that move fulfilled Perez’s promise of attempting to sign a high-profile player this summer. However, the more the situation is analysed, the more it raises an intriguing question: did Real Madrid ever truly want to sign Alvarez? Unsurprisingly, Barcelona have been heavily linked with the player. The Catalan giants are searching for elite talent capable of replacing Robert Lewandowski, and Alvarez fits that profile perfectly. That is why Real Madrid’s €150 million bid is so fascinating. Whether there was genuine interest or not, the mere existence of such an offer immediately changes the dynamics of any future negotiation.  Sure, Real Madrid faced immediate rejection and were mocked by their inter-city rivals . However, they have done Diego Simeone’s side a huge favour. Simply put, Atletico Madrid can now point to that figure as proof of the player’s value. Once a club has turned down €150 million, there is little incentive to entertain significantly lower offers. This is why Barcelona could find themselves facing a major obstacle.  Despite improvements in their financial situation, the club remains careful with spending and continues to operate under economic restrictions.  Matching or surpassing a figure in excess of €150 million would be an impossible challenge. Nobody outside those discussions knows exactly what was said. However, the sequence of events has inevitably sparked debate in the football circle. What we have learned from this development is that Real Madrid may not have viewed Alvarez as an essential signing at all.  This means they have likely prevented a player of his quality from strengthening Barcelona. At the same time, Atletico Madrid are also in a stronger position, as rejecting such a substantial offer sends a powerful message to the market and allows them to demand an even higher fee from any future suitor.
