New recruit Opoku gives Swansea win over Leganes

[Huw Evans Picture Agency] Swansea City ended their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 home victory over Leganes courtesy of a long-range strike from new recruit Joseph Opoku. Ghana international Opoku, making just his second appearance since joining from Zulte Waregem, finished coolly from 35 yards after Leganes keeper Raul Fernandez had come out of his area. Opoku's precise effort gave Swansea a deserved win as they dominated possession for long spells against their Spanish second-tier opponents. When the home side did lose the ball, Vitor Matos' desire to play a pressing game was in evidence as his players hunted to win it back. Even so it was Leganes who had the first chance of the day, with Alvaro Tejero a little wasteful as he shot over Lawrence Vigouroux's bar. With that Swansea carried most of the threat, Elijah Just dragging a presentable chance wide before Marko Stamenic's long-range drive drew a diving save from Fernandez. The goal came shortly before half-time, after Leganes defender Gonzalo Lopez played a weak back pass as he was chased down by Adam Idah. Fernandez denied Idah with a sliding clearance, but Opoku accepted the invitation to guide the ball into the empty net with a precise first-time effort. Opoku might have had a second after the break, after more good work from Idah and Just, but this time the winger's drive curled a yard wide of the far post, while Alejandro Iranzo wasted Leganes' best chance when his chip was saved by Lawrence Vigouroux. Swansea largely maintained their control despite the inevitable flurry of second-half substitutes, with Zan Vipotnik making a welcome appearance from the bench having missed the previous three friendlies through injury. Last season's Championship top scorer got 16 minutes under his belt before Swansea return to competitive action when they host Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup on Saturday, 8 August (15:00 BST).
