'He set the standard here every day' - Hurzeler praises Welbeck

[Getty Images] "It is always sad to see a player and a person of his stature leave," says Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler following the announcement of Danny Welbeck's move to Chelsea . The 35-year-old forward, who joined the Seagulls on a free transfer in October 2020, went on to make 201 appearances in all competitions - scoring 51 goals and contributing 18 assists. "We are all sorry to see him go," Hurzeler said. "He has been a pleasure to work with from the moment I arrived at the club. "His professionalism, attitude and commitment set the standard here every day - and he has been a fantastic support to me, personally. "As well as the quality he brought on the pitch, he was an important leader within the squad and a role model for our younger players. "We are grateful for everything he has done for the club and we wish him all the very best for the future." Brighton chairman Tony Bloom added: "He has made an incredible contribution during his six years with the club. "His performances, goals and experience played a key role in some of the most important moments in our recent history. "I would like to thank him for his outstanding service and I wish him every success in the next chapter of his career." Welbeck leaves Amex Stadium as the club's leading top-flight goalscorer, having helped Brighton achieve their highest-ever Premier League finish in 2022-2023 and having twice secured European football for the club.
