Mauricio Pochettino signs new contract with USMNT to 2030 — A good move for everyone?

Mauricio Pochettino is staying on as the head coach of the USMNT, with the Argentine coach signing a new contract to remain in charge through the 2030 World Cup and until the end of that year. Pochettino was due to be out of contract soon, but U.S. Soccer announced that he has signed a new deal which will see him lead the next four-year cycle. They also announced that as part of the new contract Pochettino and his staff will "advise and support U.S. Soccer on the broader development of the full National Team pathway, youth soccer, coaching education, professional league collaboration and other technical facets across the soccer community." Surprising but understandable move for both This is a bit of a surprise as many believed Pochettino would move on after the 2026 World Cup, where he led the USA to the last 16 before they were dumped out by Belgium in a 4-1 defeat in Seattle. But now he's here to stay and given how well the USMNT played during spells at the 2026 World Cup, Pochettino clearly believes he can build on the last two years in charge. And so does U.S. Soccer. It is clear Pochettino has had a big impact over the last two years in charge and he has two Gold Cups (2027 and 2029), World Cup qualification and perhaps even a Copa America appearance to get his squad tournament-ready for the 2030 World Cup. Also, Pochettino's options were probably limited in terms of any top jobs he could take in the Premier League and Europe, so it makes sense for him to stick around with the USMNT for a few more years to see how this all develops. It's a long way until the 2030 World Cup, but this hire gives U.S. Soccer the stability and focus they craved and Pochettino's stock is pretty high with the fanbase after the 2026 World Cup, so this new contract makes sense for everyone.
