Jordan Henderson joins Chelsea on free transfer after leaving Brentford

Jordan Henderson has completed his move to Chelsea on a free transfer after his Brentford contract was terminated by mutual consent. The England international, who turned 36 in June, has signed a two-year deal and becomes the club’s eighth first-team acquisition this summer. His departure from the Bees was confirmed last week, following reports of interest from the west London rivals. Henderson's arrival signals a departure from Chelsea's recent policy of exclusively targeting younger talent, a trend also seen with the recent signing of veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. Speaking on his move, Henderson expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge. "Given the size of the club, the manager – who I have great admiration for – and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down," he told Chelsea’s club website. Chelsea have opted for more experience this summer after also signing Danny Welbeck (Getty) He added: "I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction." Henderson concluded by outlining his commitment: "For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going." This signing suggests Chelsea are now balancing their youth-focused approach with experienced additions. The club also splashed out £117 million to complete the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa last month. Henderson brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously spent 12 years at Liverpool between 2011 and 2023. He captained the Reds to Premier League and Champions League glory, while also lifting the Club World Cup, FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his time at Anfield. Henderson opted to leave Liverpool three years ago to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, but returned to Europe just months later when he signed for Dutch giants Ajax at the start of 2024. He came back to the Premier League last summer when he penned a deal with Brentford, and did enough to force his way into Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad. Henderson made one substitute appearance in the tournament before suffering a freak arm injury while celebrating England’s epic win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.
