Welsh & English FAs turn on FIFA president Infantino The FA are set to join the Welsh FA in withdrawing support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino, following a disastrous week for the global football organisation. Photo by Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images Following FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s failed attempt to sell off stakes in the World Cup, multiple football associations are now showing their opposition to the president. Wales became the first football association to officially withdraw support on Sunday, confirming they won’t be backing Infantino’s bid for re-election for 2027-2031. The Welsh FA told Sky News : “The recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement have led us to a position where Mr Infantino has lost the confidence of the FAW to remain at the helm of world football.” FIFA President Gianni Infantino is pictured during a press conference following the FIFA Executive Football Summit near Heathrow airport in London … The English FA are now set to follow, with Sky reporting that the FA will send a letter withdrawing their support for Infantino’s re-election. Meanwhile, UEFA are considering legal action against FIFA over the scrapped World Cup plans, having previously announced a planned FIFA boycott if the sale went ahead. It will be interesting to see whether other football associations now follow Wales and England’s lead. Infantino is proving hugely unpopular in Europe, but he reportedly has more support in parts of Africa and the Middle East. It would make the FA very unpopular with their own supporters to back the FIFA president publicly. Whether this is going to be enough to convince Infantino to relinquish all the power and money he’s been chasing is another matter.
