The Catalan giants have made Alvarez their dream signing to lead Hansi Flick’s attack, but negotiations have made little progress due to Atletico’s firm stance that the Argentine is not for sale. PSG have positioned themselves as strong suitors to sign the Spaniard this summer, and if that deal happens, Flick will have only Hamza Abdelkarim, the reserve-team striker, as a natural number nine option. Although Barça have players like Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon who can play through the middle in a fluid front three, they are not suited to playing that role in all situations. Despite the Catalan club thinking of a swap deal, it feels unlikely that Ferran and Alvarez will exchange clubs this summer. Barcelona must treat both these situations individually and try to sign Alvarez while also attempting to keep Ferran for the upcoming campaign.
