Walsall boss Grant hopeful of more summer signings

Grant, who was appointed as Mat Sadler's successor in May, has already welcomed ten new faces into the club this summer after 12 senior players left the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium at the end of last season. Walsall, who begin their competitive campaign with a trip to Championship side Bristol City in the EFL Cup on Thursday, have failed to score against senior opposition across their five pre-season friendlies and former Huddersfield Town boss Grant would like further reinforcements. "Like every manager in our division, you always have an eye on what you want," Grant told BBC WM. "Sometimes what you want and what you can have are two very different things. I know that, I know we have got boundaries that we need to work within. "We will, but I'm also certain that we can be really competitive and where we want to be in four weeks' time, but we have to work really hard to make sure we are in that place because it won't just happen on its own." Grant added: "The focus is on Bristol City, but we have to split our focus and attention for the next few weeks. "As managers will tell you, that's frustrating because the bit we love most and enjoy is working with the players and preparing for games of football. "There is work still to be done. We have to make sure we are really diligent with it, but I'll be glad to see the back of it if I'm being honest." Grant indicated that he would support the idea of closing the transfer window prior to the competitive action commencing, but this summer he remains hopeful that the Saddlers are still busy leading up to the transfer deadline. "It feels like it would [be better closing before the season]. I get there are two sides to an argument - the jeopardy of things moving in-season and even the drama and theatre for everyone externally of players continuing to move. "Best laid plans can go awry. We work with what we have. There are four weeks to go, so let's work really hard to add the finishing touches to this group, then we can really knuckle down and focus."
