English out for season days after signing for York

York Knights have lost loanee prop Matty English for the season before he could play a game for the club. The 28-year-old Huddersfield Giants player signed for the Knights on 29 July but was injured in training before last Saturday's win over St Helens and scans revealed he has damaged his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). York head coach Mark Applegarth confirmed the bad news for English, who is out of contract at the end of this season and will not be offered new terms by the Giants. "It's not a good one, unfortunately," Applegarth told BBC Radio York. "We had a few concerns over it, but it's looking like an ACL injury, so we're gutted for Matty. "He trained fully at the start of the week and unfortunately with no-one around him, his knee just went on him." York sign Huddersfield's English on loan deal Applegarth hinted that English will remain at York next season, saying: "I feel for him but we'll get Matty right and make sure we look after him, and what a boost it will be when we finally do get him in a York shirt. "When you sign a loan agreement until the end of the year, and rightly so, the responsibility to look after the player is with whoever the player gets the injury with. "We're grateful Huddersfield allowed us to have Matty until the end of the year and we'll do the right thing by Matty and by us as a club. "He won't be back before the end of the year. The main thing is that mentally we get Matty right. It's a real kick in the teeth for Matty, coming to a new club on loan and then suffering an injury, but we won't be short-sighted to get rid, we'll invest some time into Matty for the person he is as much as the player, and make sure he's OK." The Knights have been boosted by the news that Jesse Dee is back in full training as they prepare for the trip to Leigh Leopards on Friday, with David Nofoaluma and Sam Wood back in contention.
