Who could succeed Tiernan Lynch at Derry City?

With Derry City having confirmed the departure of Tiernan Lynch as manager on Wednesday, speculation has inevitably turned to who may occupy the role on a permanent basis in future. Former club captain Mark Connolly has been put in temporary charge of first team affairs on an interim basis and has a chance to impress the Candystripes board in the post over the coming games. Several other candidates will likely be on the lips and minds of the supporters of the Brandywell club, who may opt to wait until the end of the present campaign before making a permanent appointment. Any potential new boss will take up the mantle of trying to secure the club's first league success since way back in 1997, an achievement which has eluded several high-profile managers over the years. BBC Sport NI assesses some of the candidates for the post. Connolly in the box seat Interim manager Mark Connolly has been handed a chance to impress as he takes charge on a temporary basis and as such has the opportunity to audition for the role for the longer term. The former club captain is obviously highly regarded by the club's board, having recently been appointed as director of football at the Brandywell after a short spell spent as a player in the Irish Premiership at Coleraine. As skipper, Connolly helped steer the club to a second place finish and European football in the 2025 campaign and he is now tasked with guiding the team from their present lowly sixth place in the table to a position which may see them challenge for participation in continental competition again next year. A success, or at least significant progress, in the FAI Cup would also enhance Connolly's chances of retaining his place in the manager's office. While the former central defender, as the man in possession, must be regarded as a frontrunner to take over the reins, the fact that he has no experience in management leaves a question mark over his credentials at this stage. Whether he can fit the bill at a club with the high expectations which accompany the Derry City hotseat in his first job in management remains to be seen. Some intriguing early speculation over who might fill the Derry managerial vacancy has centred around former Celtic midfielder and ex-Ayr United and Fleetwood Town manager Scott Brown. Any successful move to secure the services of the former Scotland international would represent a major high-profile coup for the League of Ireland club. Sligo Rovers recently went down the route of appointing a candidate from outside the island of Ireland in ex-Cardiff City Under-21 manager Darren Purse and it is conceivable that Derry could adopt a similar approach. Other managers who may have admirers among the Derry board should their temporary appointment of Connolly not bear fruit include others who are currently with other clubs in the Irish top flight. Graham Coughlan has done a decent job since taking over the helm of Waterford while Ciaran Kilduff has Dundalk in the top four of the table in his first season in charge of the Oriel Park club. Former Shelbourne boss Joey O'Brien is currently out of work after his spell at Tolka Park. Could another Irish League manager be an option? Lynch's achievements in leading Larne to consecutive Irish Premiership titles and to the league stage of the Uefa Conference League impressed Derry enough to take a punt on the 50-year-old transferring some of that success to the Brandywell when they named him as Ruaidhri Higgins' successor in November 2024. Were they to go down that route again, David Healy may be an unlikely option for many, but a move for the Linfield boss may not be out of the question given he was recently linked with the vacancy at Shelbourne, and with other clubs in the past. Roy Coyle managed Derry between 1991 and 1993 after enjoying a lengthy hugely successful trophy-laden tenure as manager of Linfield. Declan Devine and Higgins are both former Candystripes managers but are presently managers of title-chasing Irish Premiership outfits, at Glentoran and Coleraine respectively.
