Ex-NI winger McGinn joins Derry City coaching team

Former Northern Ireland international Niall McGinn has joined Derry City in a coaching role as part of interim manager Mark Connolly's backroom staff. Connolly was put in temporary charge of first-team affairs with the Candystripes after it was revealed on Wednesday that the club had parted company with Tiernan Lynch . The club have said McGinn will work with both the first team and the academy. McGinn had most recently been playing for Peterhead in Scottish League One and took up a player/coach role at the club. The 39-year-old was capped 72 times by Northern Ireland, scoring six goals, most famously finding the net in the 2-0 win over Ukraine at the Euro 2016 finals in France. McGinn counts Derry City among the many clubs he has played for, having been part of the Brandywell squad in the 2008-09 season. His playing career has also seen him turn out for Dungannon Swifts, Celtic, Aberdeen, South Korean club Gwangju, Dundee and Glentoran, as well as loan spells at Brentford and Greenock Morton. Derry sit sixth in the League of Ireland Premier Division table, with Sligo Rovers their visitors on Friday evening, a game which will be broadcast live on BBC iPlayer.
