Bajkowski reports that Manchester City are not in the market for a right-back. As per Bajkowski’s report, City did have an interest in signing Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto. However, Chelsea’s £75 million asking price for the French international has put City off that particular move. Furthermore, Bajkowski reports that Manchester City are happy with their options for the right-back position. Matheus Nunes will remain Manchester City’s first-choice right-back. Abdukodir Khusanov can also step into the role when required. Bajkowski adds that Vitor Reis is set to remain at Manchester City for next season. The Brazilian defender slotted in at right-back against the K-League All-Stars and the opportunity to play at right-back will offer Reis the opportunity for more minutes than simply being cover at centre-back. Enzo Maresca’s system may mean that the options at his disposal have changed the right-back equation. Manchester City look to be out of the hunt for a right-back. At first glance, that does seem like disappointing news given that City have appeared to need another right-back for two seasons now. However, the rise of Matheus Nunes has taken the need to sign a quality right-back away. Also, Enzo Maresca’s system may have alleviated the need for City to sign a right-back. Enzo Maresca typically wants one of his two full-backs to invert into midfield. At left-back, Nico O’Reilly, Josko Gvardiol and potentially Rayan Ait-Nouri can fulfil that duty. Matheus Nunes can do that on the right. If the assumption is that Nico O’Reilly in particular inverts into midfield on a regular basis, Maresca can use a centre-back at right-back. In possession, City revert to a back three. During the two preseason friendlies against Inter Milan and the K-League All-Stars, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis have fulfilled this duty. Also, Rico Lewis can invert into midfield from right-back so Enzo Maresca has the options at right-back to implement his style of play without needing to sign another right-back.
