Jersey Bulls ready for new league

Jersey Bulls finished third in Isthmian League South East last season [Frank Pilnick] Jersey Bulls manager Elliot Powell hopes the club's move to Isthmian League South Central will benefit his side. The Bulls are in their second season in the eighth tier and finished third in the league's South East division last season, losing out in the play-offs. The move west opens up chances to shorten travel distances with the option of flying into Southampton or London Heathrow to play sides based in Hampshire, Berkshire and west London. Last season the club mainly used London Gatwick ahead of sometimes lengthy road journeys into Kent and Sussex. "If it means a seven-hour day away on a Saturday rather than an 11-hour day away on a Saturday, then we have to take that," Powell told BBC Sport. "If you look at the likes of Adam Trotter, players that probably stepped away because of those travel commitments, then anything we can do to try and prolong the career of anybody that's playing for the Jersey Bulls is something that we have to take seriously and I'm really happy that the board are able to move us leagues." However their opponents on the opening day, Harrow Borough, are familiar to the islanders from their clash in the FA Trophy last season. "We played against Harrow Borough before, played really poorly on that day and got beat 4-0, so we know a little bit about them," said Powell. "We know a little bit about Bedfont Sports, we know a lot about Cobham, so there's teams in our league that we know bits and pieces about and I think it'll be much of a muchness to the South East League. "There's less 3G pitches so I'd imagine it'd be a slightly more direct league in terms of how teams play, just with the nature of the pitches that we'll be playing on in November, December, January time, and even starting on Saturday we know it's not a great surface that we're going away to. "It'll be semi-professional league and we're an amateur team in it, so it's going be a tough battle for us, but if we play anywhere near how we did last season I'd expect a successful season again." Winger Rai Dos Santos is one of the players who have left Jersey Bulls over the summer [Lauren Queree] The islanders have a new look to their side with experienced players like Adam Trotter and Luke Campbell calling time on their Bulls careers, while winger Rai Dos Santos has moved to Australia. Bulls have made a couple of high-profile additions, with former winger Sami Henia-Kamau returning after spells with Swansea City and Hull City, as well as winning a cap for Kenya, and Somalia midfielder Jarma Mohamed joining the side after moving to Jersey. But Powell can still call on experienced players such as striker Lorne Bickley, midfielder Luke Watson, captain James Queree and goalkeeper Euan van der Vliet, as well as some promising young players from the club's academy "When you can bring in the likes of Jarma to replace Adam, we've got Jack Lumsden back from university, Harry Curtis sort of slots in for that Luke Campbell vacancy, and then we've got Sami Henia-Kamau back from the UK as well, so he naturally replaces Rai," he explained. "We've worked really hard and every credit to the board that have helped us bring these players back and make sure there's work opportunities for them. "We're still a fully amateur club, nothing's changed on that front. These players will still be working nine to five or whatever their working hours may be, and football is very much a side gig for them. "So it's difficult for us to recruit players, there's so many hoops that we have to jump through and so many other considerations that we have to make, but we're really happy with the business that we've done. "The best bit is that it's all underpinned by some really promising young players coming through from the local game with Harry McKenzie, Casey Nixon and Darryl Mvalo, so it's a really exciting time. "It is a slightly new-look Bulls side, but you've still got the stalwarts there of Queree, Watson, van der Vliet, Jay Giles, so there's plenty of experience still to help these young lads through. "But I think just a slightly fresh look to the team will hopefully stand us in good stead this season."
