Newcastle considering move for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to replace Bruno Guimarães

Newcastle considering move for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to replace Bruno Guimarães Newcastle United have placed Olympique de Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (31) on their shortlist as they prepare for the likely departure of Bruno Guimarães, according to a report from Foot Mercato. Marseille are under pressure to raise funds and reduce their wage bill before the end of the transfer window, with several senior players now available for the right price. Gerónimo Rulli and Facundo Medina are already closing in on departures, while Højbjerg is another player whom OM would not stand in the way of should a satisfactory offer arrive. According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson is directly overseeing the club’s interest in the Denmark international, who has emerged as one of the Magpies’ options to strengthen their midfield. Newcastle are preparing for the imminent departure of Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal and view Højbjerg as a player capable of bringing experience and leadership to Eddie Howe’s midfield. The former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton midfielder already has extensive Premier League experience, something which appeals to Newcastle as they look for a player capable of making an immediate impact. Højbjerg joined Marseille last summer and quickly became an important figure at the Vélodrome. However, OM’s current financial situation means even established members of the squad are no longer considered untouchable. GFFN | George Boxall
