If Jacquet is unavailable, Liverpool could find themselves relying heavily on a young and inexperienced option alongside Van Dijk. Mor Talla Ndiaye is clearly highly regarded and has plenty of potential, but asking him to make his Premier League debut in such difficult circumstances would be a huge responsibility. Ifeanyi Ndukwe cannot currently provide another option either, with his work permit situation preventing him from playing. Suddenly, what looked like an area with reasonable depth has become a serious weakness. That is particularly concerning because Iraola's style is unlikely to make life easier for his defenders. His teams are expected to play with intensity, defend aggressively and often leave space behind them. That requires centre-backs who are comfortable defending large areas and dealing with pressure. Liverpool therefore need more than just bodies. They need defenders who can actually compete for starting places and give Iraola the flexibility to rotate throughout the season. There is still time for Richard Hughes to address the situation, but this is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Liverpool cannot afford to spend the season hoping everyone stays fit. Van Dijk cannot be expected to carry the defence, and the younger players should be introduced because they are ready, not because the club has run out of alternatives. Thankfully, Liverpool are making moves to fix this and Ronald Araujo is expected to join the Reds this summer. Well, he is expected but it's pretty much looking guaranteed.
