Arteta’s midfield with both Guimaraes and Odegaard might be too heavily weighted for two deep-lying creative influences, and the suggestion that Odegaard could leave if the deal goes through reflects a genuine tactical question rather than just transfer noise. Arsenal’s title defence might look significantly different in terms of personnel than the title win did, which is a more interesting story than just adding a good player. What the Rest of the Market Is Doing Manchester City at 5/2 is interesting given they are starting life without Guardiola for the first time since 2016. Whoever takes over inherits a squad still full of quality but without the manager who made that quality function at its highest level. The market is giving City significant credit for the players they have. Whether that credit is warranted depends heavily on how the transition goes in the opening weeks. Arsenal do have Arteta now who has been the manager for the team, much longer than any other manager in an England’s top division team. Many regard him as the most settled coaching situation, with very few contenders. Guimaraes’ arrival will strengthen an already winning title squad. The Premier League odds reflect that, as they probably should. What Happens Before August 22nd Newcastle now need a replacement and may have to move quickly. Arsenal might make further moves.
