Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, David Lynch discussed Jones’ situation after the midfielder missed Liverpool’s friendly against AS Monaco with discomfort in his hip. Lynch was clear that the absence should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of an imminent transfer. “If it’s around a move that they withdraw a player, Liverpool sometimes just happy to admit that,” Lynch said, before referencing Joe Gomez being left out of Arne Slot’s first game at Ipswich because he was exploring a move away. On Jones, Lynch added: “It genuinely is the case that discomfort in his hip, albeit he could be sold, is still an active situation.” Inter Interest Keeps Jones Future Open The discussion inevitably moved towards Inter Milan, with Davis referencing ongoing reports around the Serie A club’s interest. Lynch acknowledged that the possibility of a move remains alive. “The big question mark is what happens with him and Inter in the meantime,” he said. That uncertainty comes at an awkward point for Jones after what Lynch considered an underwhelming pre season. “He just hasn’t looked very good, unfortunately,” Lynch said. He had expected the midfielder to potentially benefit from working under Andoni Iraola. “I had high hopes for him fitting in under Iriola and maybe making an impact,” he added. Lynch also raised the possibility, while stressing that it was speculation, that uncertainty surrounding Jones’ future may have affected his performances. “You wonder, is his mind elsewhere a little bit and has been during the tour and that’s taken away from his performances? Or is he just having a natural dip and he’s just not in great form?” For Lynch, the immediate issue is therefore much more straightforward. “You’re just thinking, is this window going to shut with him still being a Liverpool player?” Photo: IMAGO Injuries Remain Frustrating Factor Jones’ latest hip problem also brought attention back to an issue that has affected his Liverpool career at different stages. Lynch described the latest setback as “frustrating” and highlighted the midfielder’s difficulty in building sustained runs of matches. “He’s had a lot of those little niggles or little illnesses at the wrong time,” Lynch said. He added: “It’s one of his biggest drawbacks, he’s just not been able to get consistent games sometimes because he’s had those setbacks from time to time, then someone else takes the shirt off him and doesn’t relinquish it.” Liverpool will hope the current problem remains minor, particularly with competitive football approaching. Liverpool Midfield Signing Far From Guaranteed Perhaps the most significant part of the Media Matters discussion came when attention turned towards whether a Jones departure would trigger another Liverpool midfield signing. Lynch does not believe that outcome should be considered automatic. “I also want to kind of prepare people for the idea, I think if Curtis Jones goes, I don’t think it’s nailed on they sign someone,” he said. He then went further. “I really don’t because I think it would require Mac Allister going as well.” Photo: IMAGO That assessment suggests Liverpool could be comfortable reallocating Jones’ minutes internally rather than immediately returning to the transfer market. Lynch specifically referenced Trey Nyoni. “I think they would see Trey maybe stepping up and taking Curtis Jones’ minutes,” he said. Liverpool’s midfield structure has also changed because Florian Wirtz is expected to operate further forward. “Outside of that, in terms of a midfield signing, it would probably require an exit, particularly because the only midfield spots that are open now that Wirtz is going to be in the ten is the two behind him,” Lynch explained. Gravenberch Backed to Keep His Role Lynch also pushed back against the idea that Liverpool desperately require a specialist defensive midfielder this summer. He believes Ryan Gravenberch has been undervalued in some of the debate surrounding the position. “I think people don’t appreciate enough what Liverpool have got there,” Lynch said. His view is that improvements can come through coaching and organisation rather than necessarily another transfer. “I think if you get things right organisationally in midfield this season, it will look a lot more solid.” That leaves Liverpool with an intriguing decision. Jones could still depart if the Inter situation develops, but Lynch’s comments suggest supporters should not assume his exit would immediately produce another midfield arrival. As things stand, Liverpool may already believe the solutions are within Iraola’s squad.
