30-year-old Spanish star’s arrival could be the best thing for Marc Bernal – Opinion When Barcelona are linked with a world-class player, one of the first questions fans ask is always the same: “What does this mean for the youngsters?” That has certainly been the case with Rodri. The Manchester City midfielder is widely regarded as one of the finest holding midfielders in the world, and the idea of him arriving at Barcelona has sparked concerns about Bernal’s future. Those concerns are misplaced. If anything, signing Rodri would increase Bernal’s chances of becoming Barça ’s long-term No. 6 rather than reduce them. Different players were tried, systems were adjusted, and makeshift solutions became the norm. The club spent years asking who would replace Busquets without preparing for it. That is exactly the mistake they now have the opportunity to avoid with Rodri. Instead of throwing Bernal into the deep end at 19 and asking him to thrive immediately in one of football’s most demanding positions, Barcelona could allow him to develop behind a genuine elite reference point. That is a luxury very few clubs get. Learning from the best matters There is no substitute for experience. Training every day alongside Rodri would expose Bernal to the habits, positioning, communication and decision-making that have made the Spaniard arguably the best defensive midfielder of his generation. The biggest improvements for young midfielders often happen on the training ground. Watching how Rodri scans before receiving the ball, how he controls the tempo under pressure, when he steps into midfield and when he simply recycles possession could accelerate Bernal’s tactical education far more than playing every minute before he is ready. Young players do not only develop through minutes. They develop through the environment they are part of. There is no rush This is the most important point. Rodri is 30. If Barça were to sign him, it would most likely be a three or four-season punt rather than a decade-long investment. Rodri can elevate the Barcelona midfield further. He would be physically stronger, tactically sharper and mentally better equipped to lead Barcelona’s midfield. Compare that to asking a teenager to shoulder those responsibilities immediately, and the difference is as clear as night and day. Competition should be embraced Elite clubs are built on competition for places. They have at least two players for each position capable of starting on any given day. Barcelona cannot afford to reject world-class players simply because they have talented youngsters waiting in the wings. The objective is to create the strongest possible squad while ensuring the next generation is prepared when its time comes. Bernal should not view Rodri as a roadblock. He should see him as the perfect mentor. Barcelona’s greatest eras were built on succession planning. While signing Rodri may not always have been the club’s plan, the timing could not be better. Rodri can be the bridge that helps Bernal become Barça ’s pivot for the next decade and longer. Rather than asking, “What happens to Marc Bernal if Rodri signs?” , perhaps the better question is this: What if Rodri is exactly the player who helps Barcelona produce the next great No. 6?
