Once again, a combative Chelsea midfielder has been named as a potential midfield target for Manchester City
Once again, a combative Chelsea midfielder has been named as a potential midfield target for Manchester City The final weeks of the summer transfer window are set to be a busy time for Manchester City. There are doubts surrounding the futures of several members of Enzo Maresca’s squad. Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders are two players that could depart City before the transfer window closes. A new report has provided an update on City’s plans to bolster their midfield. Chelsea combative midfielder, Enzo Fernandez has been named as a player that City have an interest in signing. However, it seems a move that is unlikely to come together. But what is clear is that Enzo Maresca and City do have a strong interest in bringing Enzo Fernandez to the Etihad. Enzo Fernandez has once again been named as a player that Manchester City have an interest in signing. An update on the midfield situation at Manchester City has emerged today via The Athletic’s weekly Transfer DealSheet segment . It is reported that Barcelona are continuing their pursuit of Rodri. Their first bid was rejected by City but they are expected to return with an improved offer for Manchester City’s midfield general. It is also reported that Tijjani Reijnders could depart City this summer. The Athletic’s report states that a host of Premier League clubs and clubs from outside Europe have an interest in signing the Dutch international. Where it gets interesting is who The Athletic name as a potential target to strengthen their midfield if Rodri and Reijnders depart. Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi is a well-known Manchester City target to bolster their midfield. As of yet, City haven’t reached an agreement with Lille to sign Bouaddi. It is also reported that if Tijjani Reijnders leaves City they could move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Sam Lee reports that Manchester City do hold an interest in signing Enzo Fernandez. Lee adds that Enzo Maresca and the Argentinian midfielder have a strong relationship. However, it is also reported that Chelsea expect Enzo Fernandez to remain at the club for the 2026-27 season. Furthermore, Lee reports that the relationship between City and Chelsea is strained after Enzo Maresca left Chelsea to become Manchester City’s manager. Lastly, Chelsea’s £120 million asking price could be too high for City. It also seems unlikely that Chelsea would consider selling Enzo Fernandez so late in the transfer window. The logic behind a City move for Enzo Fernandez is there, but it seems to be a deal that would be almost too hard to pull off. There is sense in Manchester City moving for Enzo Fernandez. He is an elite midfielder and one that is well-versed in Enzo Maresca’s system. The Argentinian international is capable of playing in multiple roles in midfield and the strengths of his game would complement Elliot Anderson’s style of play. Enzo Fernandez is also adept at making late runs into the opponents’ penalty area and he does score goals and contribute assists from midfield. He ticks those particular boxes. Also, Enzo Maresca knows Fernandez’s playing style extremely well after their time working together at Chelsea. All of that lines up, in theory at least. As the Athletic reports, Chelsea are planning on Enzo Fernandez being at the club for next season. It would seem highly unlikely that they will sell such an important player so late in the transfer window. Especially to Manchester City. So while City may have a strong interest in signing the World Cup winner, it doesn’t look to be a feasible move at this stage. But like anything in the transfer market, that scenario could change quickly. Final thoughts. Enzo Fernandez has again been named as a player that Manchester City hold an interest in signing. Perhaps that ship has sailed and Chelsea will not want to sell Fernandez, especially not to Manchester City. Given the relationship between the two clubs after Enzo Maresca’s departure from Chelsea to eventually become City’s manager that may rule the move out. As could Chelsea’s £120 million asking price. However, Enzo Maresca does know Enzo Fernandez better than most. The Italian manager rates Fernandez highly and has a strong relationship with the Argentinian midfielder. Perhaps this may be enough for City to try and push ahead with a move for Enzo Fernandez. Time will tell. But as of right now, it would seem that City making a concrete move for Enzo Fernandez seems more improbable than possible.
