It was a shock for everyone when Arne Slot was sacked as head coach at Liverpool. It felt inevitable that the Reds would give him another season - after all, why else had he seen out last season? Just what is his reputation in European football right now? Well, it's apparently high enough that the Dutch National Team wanted to hire him. Slot reportedly went far in negotiations before rejecting their offer on salary and contract-length grounds. Slot, though, says that's nonsense. He's released a statement denying the reports, claiming things with the national team never went far. “Over the past few weeks, and particularly the past few days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, including regarding salary and contract duration. That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks," he said, per Voetbal International . “At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team. “I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week. For now, I believe that club football still has a lot to offer me. “It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me.” It won't be the Netherlands job, then. Slot has been linked with Ajax, AC Milan and many more clubs this summer but hasn't actually taken on another gig. And so it'll be fascinating to see where he lands. There is a great coach in there, as proven by the Premier League title win - something you can't exactly fluke. As of yet, though, no one has been willing to tempt Slot out of his sabbatical.
