Two clubs enter transfer tug-of-war for 'excellent' Liverpool sensation

Two clubs enter transfer tug-of-war for 'excellent' Liverpool sensation Liverpool have a lot of players among their ranks who could be on their way out this summer. The Anfield outfit still need to make a lot of changes to their first-team squad before they're even ready to start competing for titles again. Andoni Iraola took the Liverpool job knowing that he'd have a lot of issues to solve but, he probably didn't think it would be as tough as it has been. Indeed, three new players are now among Liverpool's ranks but, since their title rivals have also added a fair few new faces to their ranks, it still feels like the Reds are a bit behind. However, with their non-homegrown options among their first-team squad now full, sales are expected to take place with a decent chunk of the Reds' youngsters also expected to be sent out on loan. And now, the next player to exit Anfield seems to have just emerged. Calum Scanlon is wanted by Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday Last term, Calum Scanlon spent the second half of the 2025-26 season on loan to Cardiff. The defender featured in eight games for the Bluebirds and, while he didn't manage to get a goal or assist, he played a decent chunk of football for the League One outfit. He also featured in one Premier League two game for Liverpool but, after his pre-season performances from the 2026-27 campaign thus far, he's started to attract interest once again. The left-back is obviously not going to get any playing time with Iraola's first-team squad so, the next best thing would be for him to get loaned out. And now, thanks to an update from The Athletic, that is exactly what's about to happen. "A number of youngsters will be loaned out but not all before the start of the season, as they may be needed as cover," they wrote. " Calum Scanlon has interest from both Cardiff City - where he spent the second half of last season on loan - and Sheffield Wednesday. He’s likely to be among the first on the move." Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday would be good moves for Calum Scanlon Clearly, Scanlon made a good impression on Cardiff as they now want him back. Liverpool's left-back position has been locked down by Andy Robertson over the last couple of years but now he's gone, it's anyone's game. Of course, Milos Kerkez is going to be Iraola's first-choice but, if someone such as Scanlon, Luke Chambers or even Kostas Tsimikas end up performing well this season, that could all change next term. Indeed, League One to the Premier League would be a massive jump up in quality but, with the performances that Scanlon put in, it's clear that he has bags of potential. Joining Cardiff or Sheffield Wednesday would be a smart move for the 21-year-old as he'd be handed regular game time each week. Not only would this help further his development but it would also help him in his quest to play for Liverpool in the future. Of course, it'll be hard for him the " excellent " defender to make his case but, if he can play to a high standard in League One, it'll certainly give the Reds something to think about.
