Xavi Hernandez appointed Netherlands head coach until 2030 Xavi Hernandez has been appointed the new head coach of the Netherlands , with the former Barcelona boss signing a contract that will keep him in charge through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The 46-year-old Spaniard succeeds Ronald Koeman, who stepped down following the Netherlands’ disappointing campaign at the 2026 World Cup . Koeman informed the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) that he would not continue after his contract expired, bringing an end to his second spell in charge of Oranje. His departure came just hours after the Dutch suffered a painful round-of-32 exit in the United States, losing to Paraguay on penalties after the two sides could not be separated. The KNVB have now moved quickly to appoint Xavi, handing the former Spain international the task of rebuilding the national side and challenging for major honours over the next four years. Xavi arrives with considerable coaching pedigree despite his relatively short managerial career. He enjoyed a successful spell at Barcelona, where he won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup while giving opportunities to several emerging players. His appointment also represents a return to the international game for a man who knows exactly what it takes to succeed on the biggest stage. Xavi was part of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad in 2010 and enjoyed a glittering playing career with Barcelona, winning four Champions League titles and eight La Liga crowns. After beginning his coaching career with Al-Sadd, Xavi returned to Barcelona in 2021 and remained at the club until 2024. He now faces a different challenge with the Netherlands, who will expect the new boss to harness a talented generation of players and restore Oranje among Europe’s elite.
