Real Madrid target offered improved contract by current club; decision pending Real Madrid are going after both of Manchester City’s centre-backs this summer in the hope of landing at least one as a massive defensive upgrade. Of the two players, it is Josko Gvardiol who stands out as the top target, but Ruben Dias  also remains a top option  in Jose Mourinho’s eyes. Neither signing, however, is expected to be easy, more so in the case of the Croatian international who is concurrently in talks to  renew his contract  with Manchester City. Manchester City are reportedly offering Gvardiol a new and improved contract until 2032 with an improved salary, putting a big step forward in the negotiations. The ball is now in the player’s court – he must either decide to extend his stay in England on the terms offered or push for a move to Real Madrid this summer. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images) As reported earlier this week, Gvardiol himself is attracted to the possibility of working under Jose Mourinho and is thus open to securing the move to Spain. After all, the new Real Madrid manager has him firmly as a key piece in his plans, not only as a starting centre-back but as a versatile option. Mourinho wants his defence to be flexible enough next season to constantly shift between a back three and a back four based on the game state. Centre-backs who can take up wide positions thus appeal to him, and Gvardiol fits that description.
