Scanlon has already proved he can contribute at Cardiff, so sending him back into a familiar environment makes plenty of sense. He should be playing regularly at 21, particularly when there is no obvious route into Iraola’s starting XI this season. The encouraging part is that Liverpool appear prepared to protect his value with a new contract before the move goes through. That suggests the club still believe there could be a future for him. There is also a genuine opportunity waiting further down the line. Tsimikas remains useful cover, but Liverpool cannot rely on the same succession plan indefinitely. If Scanlon can establish himself as a strong Championship left-back over the coming season, he could return next summer with far greater experience and confidence. Supporters have seen plenty of academy players disappear into a sequence of unproductive loans. This one feels much more purposeful. Scanlon knows Cardiff, Cardiff know Scanlon, and he has already experienced success there. Now he needs 35 or 40 senior appearances and the chance to show whether he can take another meaningful step towards Liverpool’s first team.
