Lecce and Lameck Banda saga explained as controversial Serie A exit looms
Lecce and Lameck Banda saga explained as controversial Serie A exit looms Lecce and Lameck Banda have been embroiled in one of Serie A’s most puzzling sagas this summer. The Zambian winger’s tale is one that includes going missing for weeks, contract disagreements, and seemingly dragging FIFA into adjudicating an obscure move to North Africa. Here’s a recap of all that’s happened so far. Starring in Serie A survival The 2025-26 Serie A season was a difficult one for Lecce, but one that ultimately ended in relief. The club from Puglia left it late after spending much of the campaign at the wrong end of the table. Yet, they managed to survive, as a late burst of intent saw them win three of their final five clashes, with the latter 1-0 triumph against Genoa securing their status in Italy’s highest division. The scorer in that euphoric win was Lameck Banda, and this goal arrived as his team-leading fifth of the campaign, sitting nicely beside four assists on the Chipolopolo star’s stat sheet . The end of the season should’ve been a time of celebration and respite before another challenging few months. Alas, for Lameck and Lecce, the summer months were far from that idyllic picture. Going AWOL In somewhat unexpected post-season circumstances, Banda simply disappeared. I Lupi desperately tried to contact their rapid 25-year-old, but he was nowhere to be seen. As he gradually became later and later for preseason recall, frustrations turned to concern, with Italians and Zambians genuinely worried that something had happened. Some social media discourse even suggested that he’d gone missing while training back in his home country. However, as the rumours swirled, Zambia’s Bola News revealed that Banda was alive and well. He had reportedly carried on training in Lusaka, with sources close to the player telling the outlet that he had no intention of returning to Italy. The reason? “Continued logistical and bureaucratic problems.” In a nutshell, the wide man believed Lecce had carried out a contract extension behind his back. Banda joined the Giallorossi in 2022 on a four-year contract that included an option for a further year. His initial deal expired on June 30, 2026, but Lecce activated the option to extend his contract until June 2027. Bola News’ source , however, revealed that “They extended his contract without his consent, which is not right, no notification whatsoever. He is not happy.” On the contrary, Italian media reported that Lecce held a unilateral option to extend Banda’s contract until the summer of 2027, which the club did. Again, though, the explosive source maintained that the club did not have the sole right to extend the agreement without Banda’s approval. “There is a feeling that the club is taking advantage of his inability to read the Italian language; they made him sign on a piece of paper written in Italian which he did not understand.” Even worse, Banda was said to be owed one month’s salary, as well as a winning bonus from his last match. Lecce fight interest from abroad, FIFA get involved With a huge distance between both player and club in every sense, Banda began to be courted by Al-Fateh in Saudi Arabia and, somewhat bizarrely, Libyan champions Asswehly in July. Al-Fateh saw a €2.5 million offer rejected, and the latter destination steadily became favoured. Especially with the lure of a well-paid contract and the CAF Champions League. An ever-frustrated Lecce became persistent. Leaving as a ‘free agent’ or at a discounted price wasn’t going to be that easy – especially when the club expected between €5-7 million at the very least. Fast forward to August, and the saga still rolls on in Banda’s favour. At the time of writing, Lecce have unsuccessfully taken their case to FIFA . The Serie A side are reportedly demanding compensation, with Italy’s FIGC also trying to get the winger’s ITC (International Transfer Certificate) cancelled. Both of these attempts fell flat, while Banda was reportedly already meeting with the Libyan club in Egypt. The Zambian has allegedly been offered a two-year contract proposal by Asswehly worth €1.6 million per season ahead of their league and CAF campaign. Asswehly have argued that Banda was “a player who was free of contract and that his engagement with Lecce expired by its own term on 30 June 2026.” They have also rejected Lecce’s demands for payment. It is understood that the Italians will pursue the matter further. GIFN | Max Bradfield
