Newcastle in talks to sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City

Newcastle in talks to sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City Newcastle are in talks with Manchester City over Nico Gonzalez, according to The Athletic . The Magpies are looking to reinforce their midfield following the sales of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal respectively. They have already signed midfielders Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba but want to make further additions in the middle of the park. Newcastle are now understood to have held initial discussions on signing Gonzalez. Gonzalez joined Man City in January 2025, with the Cityzens short of midfielders due to injuries, most notably Rodri, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The 24-year-old has made 60 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals. Gonzalez has largely been inconsistent since joining Man City, and the club would be open to selling the Spanish midfielder. Gonzalez’s versatility could appeal to Newcastle, with the Spaniard capable of operating as a No. 8 or deeper midfielder. His ball-carrying ability and defensive attributes could strengthen the Tynesiders’ midfield. City are looking to rebuild their midfield following the departures of Bernardo Silva and Rodri. They have already signed Elliot Anderson and are working on signing Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez. Gonzalez does not appear to be in manager Enzo Maresca’s plans. He played just 11 minutes in City’s 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday . The Barcelona youth product is open to staying at City but may need to leave the club to get regular playing time in the new campaign. Newcastle could be a good destination for Gonzalez, provided he is guaranteed a starting berth. Stats from Sofascore
