Jose Mourinho opens up on Real Madrid’s failed Rodri move – “He had doubts” Earlier this month, Real Madrid fell short in a blockbuster move to sign Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri. Despite being favourites for much of the summer, Barcelona swooped in for the 30-year-old , with a deal being officially confirmed in the last 24 hours, much to the disappointment of Madridistas across the world. In the days after Real Madrid’s bid to sign Rodri fell through, it was reported that head coach Jose Mourinho was left furious at the club’s inability to get the deal over the line. However, he has now confirmed in an interview with El Chiringuito (via MD ) that this was not the case, and rather, he himself has doubts about signing the 2026 World Cup Golden Ball winner. “I don’t miss Rodri. We have solutions, quality and players that you analyse for what they have done, but I like to think that I have the ability to make them better. I don’t think Barça stole Rodri from Madrid. “I spoke a couple of times with Rodri. Real Madrid make him a very good offer, the relationship with City is very good. The club has made contact with him, but he has had doubts. What I think has happened is that the doubts he has had have created doubts for me. He is an extraordinary player that would have been very suitable for us, but I think Madrid are of a dimension that cannot have players who think twice. I wish him well, although not too much.” Will Real Madrid sign a midfielder before transfer deadline? Mourinho was reportedly very keen to sign another midfielder this summer, and Rodri had looked like being his man. Real Madrid already missed out on Enzo Fernandez after they were priced out of a move for the Chelsea star, so with two rejections already in the bag, it will be interesting to see whether someone else is targeted before the transfer window closes at the start of September.
