'Massive privilege' to be a part of promotion celebrations - Kelly

[Getty Images] Former Coventry City captain Liam Kelly told BBC CWR "it was an honour" to hand the Championship trophy to skipper Matt Grimes at the 'We Are Back' parade earlier this summer. Midfielder Kelly made a total of 180 appearances for Coventry after arriving in 2017, and helped the club earn promotion from League Two in 2018. He was also the captain of the side when they won promotion from League One as title winners in 2020. When he left the Sky Blues in May 2024, former manager Mark Robins said he "will be rightly lauded as a club legend" for being "an integral part of Coventry City's rise through the divisions". Two years later, Kelly was invited to play a special role in the title celebrations and has since returned to the club to take charge of the under-21s. "It's a great time to be at the football club again," said Kelly to BBC CWR. "I didn't really enjoy the last couple of years of my playing career, so when this opportunity came up, I made my mind up straight away. "It was a no-brainer for me." On his role at the parade in May, Kelly added: "It was a great moment for me. I had obviously been watching Coventry over the last season and managed to make quite a few games as a fan. "I got asked a few days before the parade to hand over the trophy [to Matt Grimes] and it was such a massive privilege. "To see where Coventry had gone from in the depths of League Two, all the way back up to the Championship and now winning the Championship to get themselves back in the Premier League, it was an honour - a really special day."
