Andoni Iraola to make bold Liverpool call ahead of Newcastle clash
Andoni Iraola to make bold Liverpool call ahead of Newcastle clash Andoni Iraola is now just a few days away from taking charge of his first Premier League game as Liverpool's manager. The pre-season performances of his team have been fairly impressive with some youngsters even potentially being given major roles to play by the Spaniard this term. Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni are the two academy graduates who are guaranteed to play a regular role but, with James McConnell now being told that he's going to be kept at the club, it's clear that there's going to be a lot of focus on youngsters at Liverpool this term. However, with there still being a couple of weeks left of the summer transfer window, changes to their plans could be made, especially if Richard Hughes lines up a few more transfers for the Anfield outfit. But, for now at least, decisions need to be made on who's going to play where, especially since their season-opener against Newcastle is now edging closer. Andoni Iraola has chosen to let Jeremy Jacquet partner Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool this season So far, Liverpool have added three new players to their ranks this summer. Victor Munoz, Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo are the players in question with each of them being able to provide some much-needed support to Iraola's men if and when needed. With Jacquet and Aruajo both joining, it was unclear to fans which centre-back Iraola would choose to partner Virgil van Dijk . Indeed, Araujo has also been brought in to help cover right-back too but, since he has more experience under his belt and is used to playing in a system close to Iraola's, a lot of fans believe he's the best option. However, as per an update from BBC Sport, Iraola is set to make a bold call and use the Frenchman as Konate's replacement instead. "Up until the weekend, the question was very much who would partner Virgil van Dijk at centre-back for Liverpool's first Premier League game away at Newcastle on Sunday," they wrote . "But after his impressive performance in the friendly against Como on debut - when he scored too - Jeremy Jacquet looks set to start alongside the Liverpool skipper." Jeremy Jacquet will have a lot of pressure on his shoulders at Liverpool The fact that Liverpool's main transfer regime over the last couple of years has been to buy young players with plenty of potential so that they're prepared for the future has meant that they're now running out of veterans to help guide the youngsters along. Of course, Van Dijk, Alisson and Wataru Endo are all still knocking around but, with all three of their contracts expiring in June 2027, the number of older heads around Liverpool's camp will be shrinking. Most of the players that Liverpool have signed over the last couple of years have all already been ready to feature in their starting XI but, for someone such as Jacquet who's only 21 years old and has never played in England before, being Konate's successor is a tough ask. His performances in pre-season make it seem as if he's more than ready to fill the gap but the fact that he's only just returned from injury could also cause some concern. Here's hoping that the Frenchman can live up to expectations and prove that he belongs next to Van Dijk .
