Exeter's Edwards not worried by winless start
New Exeter City winger Gwion Edwards expects things to "fall into place" for the club's youthful squad over the next couple of weeks. They were holding League One local rivals Plymouth Argyle in their Carabao Cup first round tie before loanee Ethan Sutherland was sent off after 87 minutes and went on to lose 2-0. Exeter followed that defeat up with a 1-0 loss at Grimsby Town in their opening League Two match last Saturday. The financially-stretched Grecians had to cope with a number of departures over the summer following relegation back to League Two. Edwards, who has been playing through the pain of a shoulder injury, told BBC Radio Devon: "We're still growing as a team, and obviously the young players are developing, so its just piecing it all together, and over the next couple of weeks it will fall into place. "It was good to get Plymouth as a first game. It was a high intensity match, and we did well up until the sending-off. "I think Plymouth will do well this season. I also think we did really well away to Grimsby Town." Edwards, 33, has played more than 450 EFL matches for the likes of Ipswich and Crawley, but spent 2025-2026 in the National League having been relegated with Morecambe the previous season. "At Morecambe, I was in League Two, and you can't predict what happens, and we ended up getting relegated. "I've always wanted to play as high as I can, and I think I feel I'm good enough to play in the league - and the gaffer (Matt Taylor) gave me the chance to get back into League Two which is really what I wanted." The Welshman was 21 when he made his EFL debut with Crawley Town in League One, and he is now ready to embrace the role of senior player. "It's a young squad", he added. "I think I'm the oldest in the team. But up and down the country there are a lot of young players coming through. It's completely different to when I came through. "It's nice to see young talent getting a chance, and seeing them grow, and the opportunity they've got is massive, especially at this club. "I'm experienced, I've been around different clubs and played lots of games. I think its just being there for any advice they need, helping them, coaching a little bit. "I really enjoy it to be fair. It's good to give back from what I've learnt over the years and help them develop as players, and as people." Exeter host Accrington Stanley on Saturday (15:00 BST).
