Report: Man City ready to join the race for French midfielder

Report: Man City ready to join the race for French midfielder Manchester City Eye Manu Kone as Midfield Rebuild Accelerates Manchester City’s summer has moved quickly, and the midfield overhaul now looks like the central story of their window. According to Daily Mail, City have “identified Roma’s Manu Kone as a potential signing for their revamped midfield after selling Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders.” That is the key line here, and it tells you plenty about where this squad is heading under Enzo Maresca. Let’s start with the obvious. “Both midfielders departed this week for a combined total of around £110million”, which is serious money, but also serious disruption. Rodri and Reijnders out means structure, control and experience removed in one go. You do not replace that with sentiment. You replace it with profile, availability and tactical fit. Photo IMAGO Manu Kone Enters City Thinking Kone fits part of that brief. The 25-year-old has “spent the past two years in Serie A, scoring four goals in 63 appearances for Roma, but is more renowned for his dynamism and excels off the ball.” That reads like a player City believe can restore energy and defensive intensity in central areas. He is not a glamour signing, and that is often the point. Roma are said to want “around £51m” for the France international, who “featured five times for France during the World Cup” and has 19 caps in total. There is also a market angle here. “Both Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with the former Borussia Monchengladbach man”, while United had already “spoken to his representatives”. City stepping in now would be practical and opportunistic. Midfield Rebuild Goes Beyond One Deal Kone is not the only name in play. City are “hopeful of wrapping up a deal for Lille’s deep-lying midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, valued at £85m, in the coming days”, which underlines how broad this rebuild is. Youth and upside with Bouaddi, mobility and experience with Kone, that would be coherent planning. Then there is Enzo Fernandez. City “remain interested in Enzo Fernandez”, but “are unwilling to reach Chelsea’s demands” after a “£120m” expectation failed to bring a formal bid. That feels like a useful pressure point rather than an imminent deal. If Chelsea soften, City may engage. If not, they move on. Outgoing Deals Could Fund More Movement There is more money potentially coming in. “City are in advanced talks to sell both Savinho and Omar Marmoush to Tottenham.” The report adds that “the two deals combined would likely be worth upwards of £140m”, giving Maresca room to reshape the squad decisively before the season begins. There is no mystery here. This is a club trying to reset quickly, and Kone looks like one of the practical pieces in that process. Our View From a City fan’s perspective, this report makes sense, even if it raises a few obvious concerns. Selling Rodri and Reijnders in the same week is not minor surgery, it is ripping out the core of the midfield and hoping the replacement work is clean. It rarely is. Kone, though, feels like the sort of player supporters can warm to quickly. He sounds functional, athletic and tactically useful. “More renowned for his dynamism and excels off the ball” is exactly the type of description that matters when a team needs balance. Every midfield needs workers as well as technicians. If Maresca wants legs, aggression and recovery speed, Kone ticks boxes. The bigger question is whether City are spreading themselves too widely. Bouaddi at £85m, interest in Enzo Fernandez at £120m, Kone at £51m, that is elite-level spending even before looking at the broader squad. Yes, the club could offset that with Savinho and Marmoush sales, but fans will still want to know if this is a proper rebuild or simply a rushed response to late exits. If Kone arrives, he should be judged for what he is likely being signed to do, stabilise the side, cover ground and help a new-look midfield function. He does not need to be Rodri. Nobody is Rodri. He needs to make City harder to play through. Right now, that may be the most urgent job in the squad. Source: Daily Mail
