Barcelona wonderkid forces his way into Flick’s plans for La Liga opener vs Elche Hamza Abdelkarim’s impressive pre-season could hand Hansi Flick an unexpected attacking option when Barcelona begin their 2026/27 La Liga campaign against Elche. According to Mundo Deportivo , the 18-year-old Egyptian forward is increasingly gaining ground as a possible option for Flick ahead of Sunday’s season opener. It must be remembered that Barcelona are still looking at the transfer market for another striker, with both Flick and sporting director Deco leaving the door open for further attacking additions.  But while the club assess potential signings, Abdelkarim has been making a strong argument on the pitch. The young forward finished Barcelona’s pre-season with four goals in just three appearances, including the opening goal in the Joan Gamper Trophy victory over Al Ahly. He started against his former club , played 73 minutes and once again showed the instincts of a natural penalty-box striker. Now, the question is whether Flick believes Abdelkarim has done enough to earn a place in the squad against Elche or perhaps even a more significant role. His four goals in three games have made him one of Barcelona’s standout performers during the summer preparations, particularly at a time when the club is searching for a new centre-forward following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Abdelkarim’s greatest strength appears to be his instinct around goal. He attacks spaces, finds positions inside the box and has shown an ability to finish the chances that come his way, something that was evident against his former team.  Furthermore, the 18-year-old can also link play, hold the ball with his back to goal and combine with teammates when Barcelona build attacks around him. Decision time for Flick Barcelona have not hidden the fact that they could still make another move in the transfer market. Deco has acknowledged that the club is considering ways to strengthen the attack, while Flick has also spoken about the possibility of adding another player before the window closes. However, Abdelkarim’s pre-season has given the club something to think about. A place in the squad against Elche would be a significant moment in his development, particularly given that he has not yet played an official match for the first team. So, Flick now has a decision to make.
