Newcastle United unveil £190m vision for world-class new training ground

Newcastle United unveil £190m vision for world-class new training ground Newcastle United are preparing for one of the biggest training ground projects in English football after agreeing to buy the 260-acre Woolsington Hall estate for a proposed new £190 million performance complex. According to The Sun , the Magpies want the site, which is close to Newcastle International Airport and around five miles north-west of the city centre, to become the new home of their men’s first team and academy.  Subject to planning approval, the Magpies hope to complete the move in time for the 2029/30 season, with a formal application expected to be submitted to Newcastle City Council early next year. The project will transform the historic estate while keeping its character.  Woolsington Hall includes a listed country house and large areas of parkland, with Newcastle planning to restore and improve the existing buildings and surroundings as part of the development. The club also has plans to potentially add facilities for its women’s and girls’ teams in the future, making the estate a major centre for Newcastle’s football operations. Interestingly, the proposed move represents something of a return to an old idea.  Woolsington Hall has been connected with Newcastle for more than three decades, with former club owner Sir John Hall purchasing the estate in 1994 and considering it as a possible academy base.  Those plans never materialised, but the current ownership is now looking to bring the vision back on a far larger scale. Newcastle have already invested around £30m in improving their existing Benton training ground, recently renamed The Knox.  That facility could remain part of the club’s plans after the first team leaves, with the women’s team among those who could take over. Chief operating officer Brad Miller described the Woolsington project as a “homecoming”, while chief executive David Hopkinson called the deal a “landmark moment”.  The club believes the new complex can provide a world-class environment where players, coaches and staff can develop and perform at their highest level. While this plan continues, Newcastle are also revamping a squad that has been picked apart this summer. They’ve recently been linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez after losing Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
