'No panic' says Argyle's Cleverley after opening loss

Plymouth Argyle boss Tom Cleverley says they will be staying calm despite last weekend's losing start to their League One campaign. The 3-1 defeat at home to beaten play-off finalists Stockport County was just their second loss in 12 league matches stretching back to last season. Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon: "The message is absolutely no panic. Since the end of February that's our second defeat. "Before Saturday, we'd lost one match in six months. Now it's just two defeats in all kinds of football, pre-season included since then. "We're not going to panic, or lose sight of what we are and what has made us successful." Cleverley's first season at Home Park saw the Pilgrims recover from being inside the relegation places in November 2025 to then win 14 of their final 22 matches. They ended up eighth, just a single point adrift of the play-off places and Cleverley says he has faith in what they have been doing since he arrived. "We're going to try to get better at it, as well as always knowing when it's the time to adapt. But we won't be moving too far away from what's brought us a lot of wins in that time." Pilgrims midfielder Malachi Boateng, 24, was ever-present in last season's campaign. He concedes the solutions ultimately lie in the dressing room. "It's on us as a team to be better. The pre-season we've had has been good, but we just came up short (against Stockport). "It wasn't the start we expected, but the thing about football is the opportunity to put it right immediately (at Wycombe on Saturday). "We played them a few times last season, and we know what they are about. They're a good side and it will be a test." Argyle currently have three attacking players out injured, with Michael Baidoo, Owen Oseni and Freddie Issaka all sidelined. Attacking midfielder Caleb Watts is set to return to the squad this weekend after after suffering a pre-season ankle injury, but Cleverley hasn't ruled out another addition before the end of the window. "We're still trying to improve the squad, by adding one more number, so if one leaves bring two more in," he said. "Maybe a forward or a wide player - can we utilise the loan market to bring in someone who could potentially be above the level."
