O'Neil on excitement, transfers and spirit

Ipswich boss Gary O'Neil has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Sunderland at Portman Road (kick-off 15:00 BST). Here are the key lines from his news conference: O'Neil had a positive team news update ahead of Ipswich's opener as only Azor Matusiwa and Jack Taylor are not fit to be in the squad. He said his side are "in a good place", adding: "Other than a couple I anticipate us to be at full strength." He added: "I'm really pleased with where we're at and what we've managed to build, but I do expect us to be even stronger again in two to three weeks with those players coming back from injury and the close of the transfer window." O'Neil was asked about the mood with Ipswich being back in the Premier League and said: "Excitement. Everybody inside the playing group, inside the training ground, around the town, everyone I bump into just really excited to get going. Obviously it has been a big summer, an awful lot of work has been done on the pitch, in the transfer market, everywhere." He added: "One big effort from everyone inside Ipswich and that's how it will continue throughout the season. I've seen too much spirit and fight and togetherness from everybody inside and outside of the football club to think that this is going to be anything but a really successful campaign where we have a right go at it and see what we can do." When asked how many players he expects to join the club before the transfer window closes, O'Neil said: "There will be some more arrivals if everything goes to plan. We're working hard, myself and all the guys behind ownership, Mark [Ashton] and the recruitment team. So much work has gone into attracting the calibre of player to this challenge, and that will continue over the next few days." On Ipswich's summer spending: "We've spent a lot of money because the transition from Championship to Premier League is big. There is a big, big difference. We're trying to give this football club the best chance it can have to be competitive at the level." He continued: "Ipswich were in the Premier League two years ago and spent a lot of money then as well. It doesn't guarantee you anything. Sunderland were successful last year, Leeds were successful, but spending money doesn't guarantee anything. The players that have been here, the core of the group, the club, Portman Road, the supporters, that's all going to be far, far more important than anything we've spent in the transfer window."
