Enzo Maresca raises a very valid point as Manchester City bid to replace Rodri
Enzo Maresca raises a very valid point as Manchester City bid to replace Rodri Manchester City have bid farewell to a host of club icons and heroes in recent years. The latest of those to depart is Rodri. Manchester City’s former midfield general signed for Barcelona at the beginning of this week. City will now bid to replace Rodri via the transfer market and by utilising what they have to replace one of the world’s best midfielders. Speaking on Friday, Enzo Maresca did mention that City would now have to replace a club icon. But as Maresca said, Manchester City have been down this road before, and he raised an extremely valid point about the work that City have previously done in replacing club legends. Enzo Maresca believes that Manchester City will find the new Rodri as it is a process they know all too well. Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca was asked on Frida y about City now having to replace Rodri. Maresca said it is a process that City will now undertake, however he added that it is a road that the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders have been down before and successfully navigated. Enzo Maresca explained: “ Try to find the new Rodri, it is what it is. Rodri, when he arrived here hadn’t won the Ballon d’Or, the Champions League or the Club World Cup. ” “ When he joined the club and after he achieved many important things. Now the target for us is to try to find the new Rodri. “ “ I was thinking last night when David Silva was here, [people were] worried, Kevin [De Bruyne] arrived. When Aguero was here, everyone was worried, Erling arrived. Fernandino? Rodri arrived. It’s just about this. “ “ When they leave we need to recruit the next one. Last night I was thinking about that, it’s normal, it’s a change, it’s not a problem go again and try. “ Enzo Maresca has raised a very valid point and City have succeeded in replacing club icons in the past and will aim to do so again. As Pep Guardiola said when he called time on his decade of dominance as Manchester City’s manager: “Nothing is eternal.” Players and managers come and go from clubs and the cycle goes on. Club icons such as Pep Guardiola, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones, David Silva, Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, Fernandinho and a host of others have all left the club in recent times. Once they leave, the task becomes replacing them and moving onto the next era. Given how this week has transpired it has been forgotten that Manchester City have successfully completed this task in the past. Rodri himself replaced Fernandinho. Instead of becoming the next Fernandinho, Rodri became a Ballon d’Or winner in his own style. Sergio Aguero was eventually replaced by Erling Haaland. Haaland has forged his own legacy since becoming that main man up front for City. De Bruyne replaced David Silva as Manchester City’s chief creator when arguably City’s greatest ever player called time on his City career. De Bruyne also did it his way. The point is, that Manchester City have replaced club icons before and will have to do it again as they bid to replace Rodri and Bernardo Silva as Enzo Maresca explained. Elliot Anderson will step into the void left by their departure. Instead of expecting Anderson to be a straight Rodri or Bernardo Silva replacement, he will go about his City career in his own way. Same as whoever City sign to fill the Rodri void. As Enzo Maresca pointed out, Manchester City have replaced club legends before and been successful in that process. They will now have to do it all over again. Time will tell if they succeed, but their past deeds indicate that they know how to complete the task at hand.
