Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund in talks to finalise young defender’s move to Bundesliga
Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund in talks to finalise young defender’s move to Bundesliga Borussia Dortmund started the season with a disappointing defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFL Supercup, where the absence of depth in the fullback position was clearly visible. That is why the club are looking to shore up their defensive unit by signing Hector Fort from Barcelona. Fort is expected to add more depth to Dortmund’s fullback department and compete with Julian Ryerson for a place in the starting eleven. The two clubs are discussing the structure of the deal, which could be worth around €10 million. Dortmund have sent their representatives to Barcelona to finalise this deal. The Catalans are looking for a figure of around €15-20 million for the services of Fort, given that he already has some amount of experience at the highest level of football. Another option being explored in a deal worth €10 million, in which Barcelona may hold a certain percentage of the player’s transfer rights as well as a buyback clause in the future. That buyback clause figure could reach around €50 million given that Fort has shown immense potential during his playing career so far. Can Fort thrive at Dortmund? Fort will have to compete with Ryerson at Dortmund. (Photo by Timothy Rogers/Getty Images) Fort, for his part, is delighted to be joining Bundesliga , having rejected proposals from other clubs across Europe, simply in his quest to join Dortmund. The Black and Yellows, for their part, are in desperate need for reinforcements in the defensive unit, with the club lacking a quality alternative for someone like Ryerson. While Ryerson is a gritty defender known for his defending and ability to hurt crosses into the box, Fort can provide more technical support, especially in the build-up play. With Dortmund boasting more technically-adept players like Konstantinos Karetsas and Giannis Konstantelias this season, having the technical support of Fort could prove to be useful. But that is not a guaranteed sign of success. Barcelona youngsters have struggled to thrive at Dortmund in the past, with players like Mateu Morey and Sergio Gomez failing to make a name for themselves in the club. Whether or not Fort can break that trend remains to be seen.
