Manchester City 2 Bournemouth 1: Thoughts and observations from City’s comeback victory
Manchester City 2 Bournemouth 1: Thoughts and observations from City’s comeback victory Manchester City 2 (Marc Guehi 84′, Josko Gvardiol 90+1) Bournemouth 1 (Marcus Tavernier 26′) Manchester City have beaten Bournemouth 2-1 today at the Etihad Stadium. Enzo Maresca’s side have started their 2026-27 Premier League campaign with a stirring comeback victory. Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead in the 26th minute and for long stretches of today’s match it just seemed like it wasn’t City’s day. However, Marc Guehi equalized in the 84th minute for City when he headed home a Rayan Cherki corner. Cherki would set up Josko Gvardiol for a 91st-minute winning goal to ensure that City began their new era on the right foot. Enzo Maresca did alter his starting lineup from Manchester City’s FA Community Shield defeat to Arsenal. At first viewing, it seemed that Elliot Anderson, Rico Lewis, and Nico O’Reilly would start in midfield. Mateo Kovacic was named on the bench for today’s match. Phil Foden was set to play on the right wing, with Antoine Semenyo on the left and Erling Haaland up front. Manchester City’s back four did seem to be Abdukodir Khusanov, Marc Guehi, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol. As the game progressed, it was going to be interesting to see if that was how the lineup played out. First half. After a fitting and touching tribute to former Manchester City manager and football icon Kevin Keegan, the match kicked off bathed in sunshine. The Etihad Stadium was buzzing, which set the tone for the match ahead. What immediately stood out was that Marc Guehi lined up in midfield with Rico Lewis slotting in at right-back. Enzo Maresca’s decision to play Guehi in midfield was a clear indication that Enzo Maresca wanted more solidity in the middle of the pitch. Manchester City created the first chance of the match in the third minute. City played themselves out from back well and Josko Gvardiol set Erling Haaland away from just inside his own half. Haaland drove at the Bournemouth defence to the edge of the Cherries’ area and slipped a ball to Phil Foden on his right. Foden played a beautiful back heel to set Rico Lewis in on goal but his shot from six yards out was well smothered by the oncoming Bournemouth keeper Đorđe Petrovic. Bournemouth enjoy a spell of possession after Manchester City’s fast start. Enzo Maresca’s side had made a fast start to the match in the opening 10 minutes. After the 10th minute, Bournemouth did enjoy their first prolonged spell of possession. However, Marco Rose’s side didn’t create any real danger, but they did show that they had settled into the match. Nico O’Reilly surged down the left wing in the 13th minute and played a superb dinked ball into a great position. Erling Haaland arrived unmarked but he couldn’t get an effort on target. The chance fell to an awkward area for Haaland and he failed to either head the ball or swing his foot at it with the goal at his mercy. A minute later, Josko Gvardiol gave away possession in a dangerous area just outside his own area after Bournemouth pressed him into an error. Bournemouth created an opening for Rayan who saw his shot from the right-hand side of City’s well saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma at his near post. As the game approached the 25th minute, Manchester City were dominating possession but Bournemouth were defending City’s possession play well. Marco Rose’s side did look dangerous when they did get forward but their moments in possession were fleeting but did carry a threat. To validate my last point, Bournemouth took the lead after playing out brilliantly well from the back. Bournemouth took the lead through Marcus Tavernier. Marco Rose’s side played out from the back superbly well without much pressure from the City front line. A long ball was played towards Rayan, and Abdukodir Khusanov and Ruben Dias failed to deal with the threat sufficiently. Rayan picked up the loose ball and played a ball to the right to Evanilson. The Brazilian striker played in a low ball to the back post where Tavernier beat Gianluigi Donnarumma with a cracking low finish after ghosting in at the back post. No City defender covered themselves in glory and it allowed Bournemouth to take the lead. Following Marcus Tavernier’s goal, Manchester City continued to have prolonged spells of possession but weren’t creating any real openings. Bournemouth were defending well and keeping their shape, and looking to hit City on the break. As the game entered the 38th minute, Enzo Maresca’s side needed to increase the tempo of their possession play. City are denied but Bournemouth quickly have two good chances. Ðorđe Petrovic kept out an Erling Haaland header in the 39th minute. Ruben Dias played in a cross that Haaland diverted on target, which Petrovic kept out with a strong save. A minute later, Marcus Tavernier curled an effort from 20 yards out just wide of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s far post. Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Justin Kluivert in the 41st minute with a good save low down to his left after Kluivert was picked out in acres of space by Rayan on the left and Kluivert curled a low effort on goal from a great position. On the verge of halftime, a brief coming together between the two teams broke out. Referee Jarred Gillet let the play run for too long before Evanilson lunged in on Marc Guehi. Evanilson went down theatrically after Josko Gvardiol pushed him away. Evanilson was booked for his challenge on Guehi as Jarred Gillet finally brandished a card. That would be the final moment of action of the first half and Bournemouth would take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Thoughts and observations from Manchester City’s first half performance. Enzo Maresca’s side began the game brightly and the move to pair Elliot Anderson and Marc Guehi in midfield did add more solidity to the middle of the pitch for Manchester City. However, as the first half progressed, Bournemouth did grow into the game. They took the lead as City failed to deal with a long ball sufficiently and their pace on the break was a constant threat to Enzo Maresca’s side. Manchester City had to add more intensity to their possession play in the second half as they were laboured at times, which played into Bournemouth’s hands. Also, at times, Manchester City were far too easy to play through. That contributed to Bournemouth’s goal and it is an issue that must be rectified. It has been a constant theme through the three friendlies, the FA Community Shield and today’s match so far that City have played. Second half. Enzo Maresca’s side did dominate possession in the opening five minutes after halftime. However, they didn’t create any real openings until Antoine Semenyo won a corner in the 51st minute. Phil Foden floated a corner from the left to the back post, which picked out Marc Guehi unmarked at the back post. Somehow, Guehi fluffed his lines from two yards out with the goal at his mercy and Petrovic in the Bournemouth goal in no man’s land. Enzo Maresca made his first substitution in the 57th minute. Matheus Nunes replaced Rico Lewis and frankly, it was a substitution that had to be made. As the game ticked over the hour-mark, Bournemouth looked barely rattled by anything that Enzo Maresca’s side had to offer. Manchester City weren’t creating any opportunities and there was no urgency to their play. Elliot Anderson suffered what looked to be a dead leg and required treatment, and seemed to be on the verge of being taken off. That is what transpired as Elliot Anderson and Nico O’Reilly were taken off and replaced by Mateo Kovacic and Rayan Cherki. Ðorđe Petrovic denied Antoine Semenyo in the 67th minute. Manchester City won back possession just outside their own area. Antoine Semenyo received the ball from Rayan Cherki on the left, inside the Bournemouth area, and tried to play a ball back to Rayan Cherki. The Bournemouth defence intercepted Semenyo’s ball but it ricocheted back to Semenyo. The Ghana international fired in a volley at goal that Petrovic saved well down to his left. Enzo Maresca’s side had to raise their game to get anything out of the match. As the game ticked over the 70-minute mark, Manchester City had to lift if they were to get anything out of the game. They did have a half chance in the 71st minute that Erling Haaland fired high and wide. The chance came after some superb play from Matheus Nunes which created an opening and he played the ball to Phil Foden. Foden played the ball back to Matheus Nunes on the edge of the Bournemouth area and he picked out Rayan Cherki. Cherki set up a difficult chance for Haaland, who fired over the bar under pressure from the Bournemouth defence. Marc Guehi set up Erling Haaland in a great position in the 75th minute. Guehi played a great ball from the right to Haaland, who was unmarked five yards out from goal. However, Haaland’s right-footed volley was scuffed into the turf and Petrovic gathered it with ease on the second attempt. Bournemouth nearly made it 2-0 in the 79th minute. A free kick was floated in from the left which was met by the head of Daniel Jebbison. Jebbison got a header on target that Donnarumma smartly turned behind for a corner with a smart save. At long last, Manchester City finally find the back of the net!!!! Manchester City equalized in the 84th minute. Rayan Cherki floated in a superb corner from the right with his left foot, which found Marc Guehi unmarked five yards out from goal. Guehi powered his header past Petrovic to make it 1-1. Enzo Maresca’s side had squandered a series of gilt-edged chances throughout the match but they finally had the equalizer. Josko Gvardiol wins it for Enzo Maresca’s side after some sublime play from Rayan Cherki!!!!! Manchester City took a 2-1 lead in the 1st minute of second half stoppage time. Rayan Cherki received the ball on the edge of the Bournemouth area and his sublime footwork saw him create space to pick out a pass. Cherki played in Gvardiol who beat Petrovic in the Bournemouth goal with a cool finish with his right foot. Initially, Gvardiol was flagged for offside. However, after a VAR check the goal stood to send the Etihad Stadium delirious. Josko Gvardiol’s goal was the final significant moment of the match. Enzo Maresca had his first win as Manchester City manager and his team’s performance was promising, although there are areas that need to be improved. Thoughts and observations from Manchester City’s second half display and performance. Manchester City did dominate the second half, but it took the introduction of Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic and Rayan Cherki to finally break open Bournemouth’s stubborn rear-guard. Enzo Maresca’s side did play well to a degree, but they squandered too many gilt-edged chances and it almost cost them. However, their late fight-back to claim all three points will be great for team spirit. Enzo Maresca’s side is far from the finished product. All that mattered today was the result. City picked up the three points and there are clear areas that need to improve but there were plenty of positives to take from Manchester City’s overall performance. Frankly, they can be analysed during the week. The Enzo Maresca era has begun with three points and that is the most important aspect of today’s match. Manchester City player observations. Gianluigi Donnarumma- He made the saves he had to and was strong at set-pieces. I liked Donnarumma’s performance today in goal. Abdukodir Khusanov- A strong display from Khusanov as usual outside of the mix up for Bournemouth’s goal. Marc Guehi- Guehi played in midfield and I thought he fulfilled that particular role well. He wasn’t out of place in midfield that is for sure. Ruben Dias- -The City captain gave away possession on far too many occasions. Defensively, he was solid. Josko Gvardiol- He scored the winner and he is building into form. Gvardiol did make crucial interception in the first half as well. Rico Lewis- Lewis just wasn’t up to the required standard today. Defensively he was culpable for Bournemouth’s goal and wasn’t effective in possession. Elliot Anderson- I thought Anderson was City’s best player before he was taken off. He always wanted the ball and tried to make something happen. Nico O’Reilly- O’Reilly made one driving run in the first half which should have led to a goal. Outside of that, he was largely anonymous. Phil Foden- Today wasn’t his day. Foden gave away possession far too often and couldn’t get into the game at all. Antoine Semenyo- A frustrating perfromance from Semenyo. Nothing he tried came off but to his credit he never stopped trying. Erling Haaland- Haaland is lacking sharpness which was impossible to ignore today. That will come the more he plays but he was a constant threat. Substitutes. Matheus Nunes- Nunes should have replaced Rico Lewis at halftime. He made an immediate impact and showed how valuable he is to his team. Rayan Cherki- Cherki grabbed two assists and in his time on the pitch he showed why he must be a starter in this team. Today ended any doubt about Cherki’s role for Enzo Maresca. He is a starter, simple as that. Mateo Kovacic- The Croatian midfielder quietly went about his work after replacing Elliot Anderson. He played a key role in City winning that game. Jack Grealish- Grealish added intent to City’s possession play after he replaced Phil Foden.
