Three talking points ahead of Barcelona vs Athletic Club | La Liga MD1 Barcelona’s season began in the best way possible at the weekend as the Azulgranas scored five goals past Elche with much ease. The first half was not as smooth as the second period, but that was understandable considering how the substitutions altered the game. Pedri and Anthony Gordon’s arrivals, after all, changed the course of the game. Tomorrow night, they return to action once more, albeit this time, they will be playing at home. Their opponents, moreover, will offer a much more difficult challenge than their previous opposition. Athletic Club kicked off their season with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Sevilla on a night where they played over 80 minutes a man down. Tomorrow, the Camp Nou will reopen for the first time in the new season, and it is shocking how they once again face the same opponent once again. It will be Athletic Club who have the privilege of visiting the venue first in the new season, and it will be a momentous night. The summer has been eventful for Barcelona so far, and the fans already had a chance to see the team in action at the venue in an informal game just under a week ago. This time, however, there will be consequences to losing. A massive crowd is expected to arrive to witness Barcelona’s first home game of the 2026-27 campaign, and it will be interesting to see how the venue receives the World Cup winners, new signings and even Flick’s dynamics on the night. Rodri’s debut night Of all of Barcelona’s new signings of the summer, it is clear that Rodri tops the list as the most hyped and influential acquisition. Together with Pedri, they’ll allow us to control the match, the ball and the opposition,”  Hansi Flick said in his pre-game press conference , confirming the new signing’s debut. The plan, thus is on and it will be spectacular to see how the stadium receives the legendary midfielder as he kicks off a new chapter in his career.  The decibels grew beyond control when he was merely announced and presented on the field on the Joan Gamper Trophy night.  As he steps on to combine with the likes of Pedri and Dani Olmo in an official game, all eyes will be on how he fits in and the control he adds to Barcelona’s midfield. After all, there is much hype that his arrival makes Barcelona’s midfield the best in the world. Can the attack keep the steam going? In a matter of ninety minutes, the question ‘How will Barcelona manage without a striker?’ became ‘Do Barcelona need a number 9 at all?’ The change in narrative, needless to say, is a good one for Flick and Co. as it became clear how lethal the fluid attack can be against opposition who leave space behind. Not all teams, however, are Elche and offer that space. No clear conclusion, thus, can be reached until Barcelona’s attack retains the same comfort and level of output as they did at the weekend. Tomorrow’s game, thus, becomes critical in deciding the direction the narrative progresses in. Should Raphinha and Co. continue the attacking onslaught against Athletic Club, serious questions will be asked of Barcelona’s need for a striker. A poor attacking show, however, can switch the narrative as easily.
