Will Rangers avoid 'thermonuclear' European exit?

Pride, prestige and plenty of cash are on the line for Rangers tonight as they bid to join Hearts in the Conference League proper. Derek McInnes' side have little room for error with a slender 1-0 lead over Jablonec in the play-off second leg in the Czech Republic. Rangers are in the last chance saloon for European football this season - so what would the reaction be if they exit? "Thermonuclear, I think would be the only phrase for it," says The Herald football writer Stephen McGowan. "It's funny because Thursdays used to be the happy place for Rangers. The Europa League was where they went to relieve their stress, because even when things were going bad domestically, they could generally rely on European football to give them a pick-me-up. "But that hasn't really been the case recently. It was a big blow to go out the Europa League play-off. And now, of course, they have that same pressure again. "And it's not just a blow to the finances of a team who have spent a lot of money this summer if they go out and don't have any European football. It's prestige. "Having no European football might arguably be good for Rangers' chance of winning domestic trophies, but it's not good for the club."
