Mullins: Matt Dibley-Dias fits exactly what Newport needed [Newport County] Newport County boss Hayden Mullins believes new signing Matt Dibley-Dias is exactly the type of player the League Two club were looking to add. The Fulham midfielder became Newport's 11th signing of the transfer window on Wednesday, joining the Exiles on a short-term loan deal. Mullins knows the 22-year-old well from his time as Fulham Under-21s head coach, where Dibley-Dias made 31 appearances under him across three seasons. "We knew about Matt's availability and we'd inquired last week, so we're happy to get it done," said Mullins. "Matt will fit into our environment and the way we play. His character and his game will certainly suit us. "There's a certain type I'm looking for when bringing players into the building. They've got to match what we're doing at the moment and fit in with the group, and Matt certainly does that." "He can get on the ball, play a number of positions and distribute it into different areas of the pitch that we need to," Mullins added. "He's quite a combative ball-winner as well, so he certainly fits what we're looking to do." Dibley-Dias arrives to strengthen a midfield unit that has seen Ciaran Brennan and Cameron Evans start alongside the more advanced Harrison Biggins in all three competitive matches so far this season. But Mullins believes increased competition can only benefit the squad. "Matt could be a very good player in this division, but he's up against competition because the two lads in there at the moment are playing well, along with Matt Smith. "Competition always brings out the best in players and we're hoping he comes in and adds to the group." One player embracing that competition is Cole Jarvis, who scored his first Newport goal with a stoppage-time header after being deployed in a makeshift striker role during the recent defeat to Bristol Rovers. "We've got some really good boys," said Jarvis. "We've just brought in the new lad ( Dibley-Dias) from Fulham as well. I've seen him once or twice and he looks a real, real good player." Mullins says Newport are still chasing a "couple of targets" ahead of Tuesday 1 September's deadline at 23:00 BST. "We're still looking. Hopefully we can get those through and over the line. We've still got until Tuesday, but those days go pretty quick when you're involved with games and everything else. Dibley-Dias could make his Newport debut when Newport host Tranmere Rovers on Saturday 29 August (15:00 BST) as the Exiles look to start the season with two successive home wins.
