Xabi Alonso explains Enzo Fernandez’s absence from Chelsea squad amid Man City interest

Xabi Alonso said it was “decided” that Enzo Fernandez would not be in Chelsea ’s squad to face Luton Town in the Carabao Cup , despite saying the previous day that he expected the midfielder to be involved. Fernandez has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City this summer and Enzo Maresca’s side are expected to return with an offer for the Argentina international despite missing an informal deadline earlier this month. Asked whether he would like to keep Fernandez before the Luton match, Alonso added: “We want to have the best team possible. We know his qualities. However, Alonso would not be drawn on whether selling Fernandez would depend on whether the club can land a replacement. “It is always about understanding the context, the situation, timings, circumstances, so there is not a defined rule for everything,” he said. “You need to know how things have worked, what you want, what you want for the future, so I don't have the rules in stone. We need to assess each situation.”
