How will clubs respond to Euro disappointments?

It was a disappointing midweek for Hibernian, Rangers and Celtic [SNS] The Scottish Premiership returns for 10 clubs this weekend after only two sides played last time out. Five clubs were given more time to prepare for European play-off fixtures and, while Hearts succeeded in their task of progression, Rangers, Hibernian and Motherwell all missed out on the Conference League. Celtic crumbled in the second leg of their Champions League play-off against LASK, although they have the compensation of still being in Europe in the Europa League. Those midweek results beg questions before Saturday and Sunday's games. Celtic face Benfica & Hearts meet Trabzonspor Have expensively assembled Rangers improved at all under McInnes? Will Falkirk be able to capitalise on Celtic's Austrian pain? Until Tuesday, champions Celtic's season was ambling along well. Three domestic wins without conceding and a 3-0 victory over LASK in the first leg of the Champions League play-off had them in good stead. Their position improved further with the opening goal in the second leg in Austria. Four LASK goals later, it was extra time. And then, the tie was lost as a fifth concession on the night consigned Celtic to the Europa League. They will face Benfica, Bestikas, Celta Vigo, Ferencvaros, Marseille, Omonia, Torreense and Union SG in the autumn but, before then, they have domestic matters to turn to, starting with a home match with Falkirk on Saturday (15:00 BST). Celtic's form pre-Austria and their record of five wins out of five against Falkirk last season would suggest this game should hold no fears for them but could a European hangover beset the Premiership holders? Captain Callum McGregor said they were "passive" and looked "scared" against the Austrian champions. Indeed, the way in which the tie got away from Celtic was alarming. Martin O'Neill side played 120 minutes during the week while Falkirk are refreshed after two weeks without a game. Despite that, John McGlynn's side await a first league win this season and face an almighty task to get one in Glasgow. Will Dundee & St Mirren continue fast starts? Dundee were one of the teams Celtic beat earlier in the season, but narrowly. Since then, in the Premiership, Steven Pressley's side have taken big strides with 2-0 wins over Aberdeen at home and away to city rivals Dundee United, though a cup loss to Aberdeen was sandwiched in between. St Mirren are the only team other than Celtic with a 100% record in the league so far after two wins out of two against Falkirk away and St Johnstone at home. The Buddies sustained a heavy loss in their League Cup tie away to Rangers, ending their hopes of defending that trophy. Both Dundee and St Mirren should be refreshed after no midweek action, with the latter having had last weekend off too. And, on Sunday at 15:00, they host Hibernian and Motherwell, respectively - two sides coming off midweek European exits. Motherwell were already up against it away to Freiburg, who completed a 7-2 aggregate win to progress in the Conference League but Hibs endured a painful play-off exit at the hands of Gent, losing 3-2 after the Belgians scored two late goals. It may be a good time for Dundee and St Mirren to be meeting these teams. Another rude awakening for McInnes & Rangers? Sunday's fixture card starts with the 12:00 meeting of Aberdeen and Rangers, often a feisty affair. For added spice, Rangers manager Derek McInnes is of course a former Aberdeen boss and is having rather a torrid time. Still waiting for a league win and knocked out of two European competitions, McInnes faces quite the task in getting his newly assembled squad ready for the trip to Pittodrie. The Dons, on the other hand, have their tails up after an opening league win against last season's runners-up Hearts and a solid cup win against Dundee. Neither side were in action last weekend but Stephen Robinson's Aberdeen will be the more refreshed team, with Rangers having had a long night in the Czech Republic on Thursday. A painful defeat on penalties by Jablonec ended their European interest this season and confidence seems to be low. Not only that, it remains unclear both what the manager's preferred starting XI and preferred formation are. It's yet another test for McInnes early in his Ibrox tenure.
