Could the 2026 American League West be the worst division ever?

It might be time that we inform the teams in the AL West that one of them is, in fact, allowed to win the division. As August comes to a close, neither the Houston Astros, the Texas Rangers nor the Seattle Mariners look all that interested in running away with a very winnable division.  How bad has it been in the AL West this season? All five teams in the division are currently .500 or worse, with the first-place Astros sitting at 67-67 entering play Friday . All five teams also currently have negative run differentials. The Astros, Rangers and Mariners are a combined -148. Looking at it another way, three of the five teams have fired their general managers this season, including the Astros firing GM Dana Brown on Monday . The Angels ( Perry Minasian ) and A’s ( David Forst ) fired their general managers in June and August, respectively. At this point, the Astros look like the leaders of this feeble division, but that’s not saying much. Houston leads the AL West by just one game over the in-state rival Rangers and hasn’t been able to put real distance between the other contending teams in the division.  But if there’s one thing the Astros have going for them, it’s that AL MVP front-runner Yordan Álvarez is in their lineup every night and has shown no signs of slowing down. Álvarez has been a machine this season, leading the American League in every major offensive category, including batting average (.319), home runs (36), RBI (91) and hits (152). The Rangers, meanwhile, despite doing almost nothing at the trade deadline , are not only knocking on the Astros’ door but also one good week away from jumping them in the standings. The biggest thing going for Texas is that they’ve started to get healthy at the right time. The 2026 Rangers have been middling in every aspect, but with two-time World Series MVP Corey Seager back in the lineup and starting to get hot, they at least have that going for them. Then there’s the Mariners. They’ve been the biggest disappointment in baseball this season and, after being one win away from reaching the World Series last fall, are now fighting for their playoff lives. Entering this year, many believed this was going to be Seattle’s division to lose, but an offense ranked 30th in runs scored combined with dreadful seasons from Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez have left the M’s on the brink of missing the postseason. The biggest advantage Seattle has at this point is that it has the easiest schedule the rest of the way, with three games left against the Blue Jays and Rockies and seven games each against the Angels and A’s. The winner of the AL West this season might very well be the worst division winner ever. The worst division winner in MLB history by record is the 2005 San Diego Padres, who finished the season 82-80. There has never been a team that won a division or reached the postseason with a losing record. But this year’s AL West division winner has the potential to do just that. But what’s worse than the fact that one AL West team is guaranteed to get into the postseason? There’s still a possibility that two AL West teams reach the playoffs. Entering play Friday, the Rangers are only two games behind Cleveland for the third and final AL wild card. And if not for the Guardians having rattled off a seven-game winning streak, Texas would likely be in wild-card position right now. The reality is no AL West team really deserves to reach the postseason this year. All five teams deserve to go home at the end of September. But it doesn’t work that way in baseball. So we all have to resign ourselves to watching maybe the saddest division race MLB has ever seen over the season’s final four weeks.
