Barcelona superstar can save the club hundreds of millions if Flick’s experiment works out – Opinion FC Barcelona have spent the entire summer looking outside the club for their next great goalscorer. Julian Alvarez was identified as the man to replace the goals lost when Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres left. Yet, with the transfer window almost closed, the solution to Hansi Flick’s biggest problem may have been inside his dressing room all along. Raphinha has started the season as Barça’s central attacking reference point, and the experiment is producing immediate results. He scored twice in the opening 5-0 victory over Elche before finding the net again against Athletic Club, taking him to three La Liga goals already. Flick’s experiment could save Barça hundreds of millions Calling Raphinha a conventional No. 9 would be misleading. He does not play like Lewandowski, and Barcelona should not expect him to suddenly become one. What Flick has done is more interesting. Instead of asking Raphinha to wrestle with central defenders all match, Barça have been using his movement and mobility. He presses aggressively, attacks spaces behind defenders and naturally drifts into areas where others can rotate with him. Delivering the goods in front of goal. This has not been an emergency measure either. Flick is said to have been preparing Raphinha for this role for some time now. The Brazilian’s numbers under Flick have always been extraordinary. He scored 34 goals in Flick’s first season and another 21 last term before adding three at the beginning of this campaign. That is 58 goals under Flick already, and his encouraging start as Barça’s centre-forward suddenly makes the club spending hundreds of millions feel less urgent. Julian Alvarez was still the right idea That does not mean Barcelona were wrong to pursue Alvarez. Quite the opposite. The Argentine remains the sort of complete forward who could lead the club’s attack for years. The club were right to make him the priority, but Atletico Madrid have now publicly ruled out negotiations with the Catalans, while Arsenal continue to circle. Barça cannot control that situation any more, but they can control what happens inside Flick’s squad. This is where Raphinha could save the club a fortune. Instead of panicking and spending heavily on a second-choice striker, the Blaugrana can keep their money and reassess the situation later. It is a much smarter choice than turning disappointment into desperation. The caveat: Raphinha cannot do it alone There is, however, a danger in getting carried away by three goals. Barcelona need to replace an entire season’s worth of centre-forward production, not merely survive August. Raphinha will need his fellow attackers to step up as well. (Photo by Francisco Macia/Getty Images) There will be matches against deep defensive blocks where Raphinha’s movement creates less space. There will be Champions League nights when Barça need someone capable of occupying two centre-backs, holding the ball and finishing a half-chance inside a crowded penalty area. Only after Raphinha plays in all these situations can the experiment actually be judged. Fortunately, Flick does not need Raphinha to become Lewandowski. He needs Barcelona to replace Lewandowski collectively . Fermin Lopez has also started the season scoring freely, while Barça possess considerable firepower around their new makeshift striker. The responsibility of scoring goals can be spread across the forward line rather than concentrated in one player. If Alvarez somehow becomes available, Barça should still go for him. However, if he does not, the club should stick with Raphinha. Sometimes, the best transfer decision is the money you decide not to spend.
