African star agrees five year deal with Liverpool An African star has agreed a five-year deal with Liverpool. Richard Hughes and Liverpool's recruitment team will have to face serious questions about how this transfer window has unfolded. The issue is not simply that Liverpool have missed out on individual targets. That can happen to any club, particularly when competing for some of the most talented players in the market. The bigger concern is the apparent lack of contingency planning once those initial targets became unavailable. Liverpool have spent much of the summer pursuing players without successfully getting deals over the line, and their increasingly obvious need for a right-winger has only weakened their negotiating position. That desperation comes at a cost. Yankuba Minteh has reportedly been valued at around £80m, while Crystal Palace are likely to demand a significant fee for Ismaïla Sarr. Liverpool's late entry into the market means selling clubs are fully aware of the pressure Hughes and his recruitment team are now under. The Ibrahim Mbaye situation was perhaps an even clearer example of how poorly Liverpool's position has developed. PSG were reportedly asking Liverpool for around £10m more than the fee they eventually accepted from Aston Villa, leaving the Reds in the uncomfortable position of appearing willing to pay a premium simply because of their growing need for a solution. But Liverpool should arguably never have found themselves in this situation. The club knew as early as January that Mohamed Salah would be leaving. Replacing a player of his importance was always going to be one of the most difficult tasks of the summer, which should have made forward planning even more important. Liverpool may have identified Yan Diomande as their preferred target, and the collapse of that pursuit was undoubtedly a setback. There are legitimate questions over how that situation developed, particularly given the suggestion that the player's camp may never have seriously intended to take him to Anfield. But even if Diomande was the ideal candidate, Liverpool could not afford to build their entire strategy around one player. A recruitment department of Liverpool's size should have had a clear shortlist of alternatives, with different options identified well in advance. Once it became apparent that Diomande was not going to join, the club should have been ready to move quickly. Instead, Liverpool have reached the final days of the window still searching for answers. Missing out on a primary target is understandable. Entering the final days of the transfer window without a replacement for Salah, despite having known about his departure for months, is much harder to explain. Now we are in the final few days of the window and Liverpool are left scrambling. It's looking very likely that Richard Hughes' solution to fix the problem and find a candidate to succeed Salah is... Drum roll... Ismaila Sarr. Yeah you heard that right. A 28-year-old Senegalese winger with lots of experience in English football but Sarr is nothing like Salah, nor nothing like what Liverpool need. He is fast but he isn't great in one vs one situations. He scores goals but he isn't prolific. Well, anyway, it looks like Sarr is the Liverpool target. Italian journalist Nicolo Schira is reporting that the Senegalese star who has won two African Cup of Nations has agreed a five year deal with Liverpool until 2031.
