Official: Theate returns to Bologna in potential €15m deal with Eintracht Frankfurt Bologna have officially announced their signing of full-back Arthur Theate, who returns to the club on loan with an option to buy following his spell at the Dall’Ara in 2021-22. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images) The Belgium international had also joined Bologna on loan with an option to buy from Oostend back in 2021, but ended up signing permanently for Ligue 1 side Rennes for a fee reported to be worth €20m instead at the end of that season.. He went on to join Eintracht Frankfurt from Rennes in the summer of 2024, and has since gone on to make 49 appearances across all competitions for the Bundesliga side, including 37 outings in the league. He has also amassed 36 Belgium caps to date. “Bologna FC 1909 are pleased to announce the signing of defender Arthur Theate from Eintracht Frankfurt on loan until 30 June 2027, with an option to make the move permanent,” read a statement on the club website. Born in 2000, he made an immediate impact in Serie A during his first spell in Rossoblù, before continuing his international journey with Rennes and Eintracht Frankfurt, gaining valuable experience in top European leagues and competitions. Over the years, he has developed his ability in one-on-one defending and in the air, while adding personality, defensive awareness and an increasingly important role in building play from the back. “His consistency has also seen him establish himself as a regular member of the Belgium national team, representing his country at both the European Championship and World Cup. His return to Bologna therefore carries both strong symbolic and sporting significance: after leaving the club in the summer of 2022, Theate returns to the Rossoblù as a more mature player, strengthened by a journey that has seen him compete at the highest levels of international football. “A homecoming that brings back to Bologna an established defender who is still entering the prime of his footballing career.” Theate becomes Bologna’s fifth new first-team signing of the summer following the previous additions of Mikel Amondarain from Estudiantes, Rahim Alhassane from Real Oviedo, Artem Dovbyk on loan from Roma and Roberto Piccoli on loan from Fiorentina.
