Werder Bremen close in on Youri Regeer as emergency response to Jens Stage injury Werder Bremen are reportedly closing in on the signing of Ajax midfielder Youri Regeer as the Bundesliga club move quickly to respond to Jens Stage’s devastating long-term injury. According to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad , subsequently confirmed by Sport Bild and Kicker , Bremen are in advanced negotiations over a season-long loan for the 23-year-old. The proposed agreement is also expected to include a purchase option, with Regeer potentially travelling to Bremen on Monday to complete the move. Werder’s sudden activity follows confirmation that leading goalscorer Jens Stage is expected to remain sidelined until 2027 . The Danish midfielder suffered a serious thigh muscle injury in Bremen’s final training session before their Bundesliga opener against Freiburg. Sporting director Clemens Fritz described Stage’s absence as a “huge shock” and acknowledged that the influential 29-year-old cannot simply be replaced at such short notice. Youri Regeer could solve multiple Bremen problems Regeer nevertheless offers Bremen considerable flexibility. The former Netherlands U21 international primarily operates as a defensive midfielder, but has also featured at right-back – another position at which Werder have been seeking reinforcements. The Ajax academy product made 25 appearances last season and started both of the Dutch club’s opening Eredivisie fixtures this term. He remains under contract through 2029. Regeer may not constitute Bremen’s final move before the transfer deadline. Kicker notes that Stage possesses a more attacking profile and that Werder had already been considering the addition of another No. 8 or No. 10.
