Brughmans is an imposing 6ft7in goalkeeper who has already made four league appearances for Genk this season. The 18-year-old has 15 senior appearances for the Belgian club overall, keeping six clean sheets. He has also represented Belgium from Under-15 through Under-19 level, collecting 25 youth caps. Liverpool’s priority this summer has been their attacking options, with a deal for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola reportedly agreed. But if Mamardashvili leaves, another position could suddenly require attention. Liverpool could be taking a massive risk with Brughmans However, replacing Mamardashvili with an 18-year-old would be a gamble for Liverpool. Mamardashvili has hardly set Anfield alight since arriving, and his performances have not exactly made him impossible to replace. Still, there is a major difference between an underwhelming experienced goalkeeper and a teenager who is only beginning to establish himself at senior level. Alisson ’s injury record also makes this a bad idea. The Brazilian remains Liverpool’s undisputed No.1 when fit, but his fitness problems over recent seasons mean Brughmans could suddenly find himself thrown into Premier League action at any moment. That is a huge responsibility for an 18-year-old. Liverpool would be asking Brughmans to deputise for one of the best goalkeepers of his generation in high-pressure matches where mistakes can prove costly. Brughmans has exciting potential, coming from the same academy that produced Thibaut Courtois and Mike Penders. But selling Mamardashvili and immediately handing the No.2 role to an inexperienced teenager could prove an error.
