Enzo Maresca and Enzo Fernandez worked together at Chelsea, winning the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup [Getty Images] Several Manchester City players wanted to know if Enzo Fernandez would be joining the club in the last days of the transfer window as they were keen to play alongside him, says manager Enzo Maresca. The pair worked together at Chelsea and the 25-year-old Argentina international joined City from the Blues for a joint-British record £125m on deadline day. Maresca said Fernandez is "ready" to make his City debut against newly promoted Coventry City in the Premier League at Etihad Stadium on Saturday. "I know Enzo quite well and I know what he can bring to the team," Maresca said. "He is a winner - a winner's mentality and knows how to win [after] the World Cup, Club World Cup. Maresca named Fernandez captain at Chelsea but confirmed Ruben Dias as the new City skipper, replacing Bernardo Silva, who departed in the summer, with Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma part of the leadership group. Maresca added: "I just said he is a winner and when you belong to a squad and another winning player arrives, they are always happy. "I can promise you that in the last four or five days four or five players from the squad were asking if he is coming or not because they want him to be with us. "It's very important that he is with us and we are 100% happy with that." During an in-house interview on Thursday, Fernandez said he had always "dreamed of being at a club as big as City", which was seen as a slight on his former club Chelsea. Fernandez's heart has been set on leaving Stamford Bridge since the turn of the year and talks with manager Xabi Alonso this summer could not change his mind. Alonso said: "In football many things happen. With Enzo we have had conversations and always with respect. What he has done for the club has been great, but now it's time to move forward. "We have players with quality in every position and now we are ready to go." City spent a transfer window record of £458m on new signings, including £327m on a revamped midfield of Fernandez, Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi. Wingers Iliman Ndiaye and Allan, as well as back-up goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, were other first-team players that the club brought in, although they recouped more than £300m from player sales. Maresca added: "I am very happy for the effort from the ownership, [chairman] Khaldoon [Al Mubarak] and [director of football] Hugo [Viana]. Very happy.
